Back to reality

I have had a complicated history with VR technology. Every time I have used it, I have had a great time. Sadly, that fun fades rather quickly, mostly due to a lack of software. So, when I got my PSVR2 unit, I was ready to fall in love again, and just as quickly, lose interest. It is no secret that PlayStation has created some of the most interesting and comfortable headsets in the space. They are also the only console manufacturer that seems to care about the tech. At least they did. Recent news stories point to them leaving the space, and if so, PSVR2 is a wonderful swan song for PlayStation virtual reality.

Let’s start with the thing Sony always gets right, comfortability. VR headsets are large and bulky, due to the tech that has to go into them. Sony seems to be the only company that figured out how to make it not a chore to wear one. While the first PSVR was littered with wires, which was its biggest drawback, the headset was extremely comfortable.

MSRP: $399.99
Price I’d Pay: $399.99

PSVR2 fixes that issue, as the headset only has one wire to worry about, and it is extremely long. The headset itself is also extremely comfortable. Even for someone who wears glasses, I never felt uncomfortable wearing the headset itself. It has nice padding on the front, and it sits at an angle that keeps the weight of the device low. I could play for hours without issue, which is its biggest strength.

The controllers are yet another massive upgrade. The original PSVR used Move controllers, and they were not the best. The new Sense controllers are ergonomic and loaded with features. They fit snugly into each hand and have minor finger tracking. The analog sticks are smaller but still feel good. Readjusting the setup is easy through the PS5 control center, and all the buttons are where you think they should be. The straps are decent, but if not used, can get in the way. Overall, the new Sense controllers make experiences much more immersive and fun.

Setting up the PSVR2 is extremely simple. As I mentioned there is only one wire, and as soon as I power up the device, the PS5 recognizes it and starts the process. It syncs both controllers and then checks the distance from your eyes to the headset for eye tracking. Then it brings up the virtual play space, where you can see the room around you and map out obstacles, this is great. This means the headset knows where things are at all times, keeping me from banging into to them during play. The headset also has a button to use the external camera, so you can view the outside at any time.

The overall design and functionality of the headset is incredible. Sony has also gone the extra mile to include 4K and HDR into the lenses. It also has a 110-degree field of view. Everything feels premium and easy to use, which is the first step with VR.

OK, now we move to the hard part, the games. My son loves the idea of VR, so I took him along for the journey here. We downloaded all the free stuff available and purchased a few titles to check out the range of the device. Virtual rollercoasters and a weird experience called Pools were really fun. I actually got a little motion sick on the virtual coasters. One of VR’s biggest issues is that a lot of games are simply shooting galleries, and that hasn’t changed much. I tried out some rhythm games, Beat Saber being the clear standout, and of course Tetris Effect is incredible.

Titles like Resident Evil are fantastic, and the level of details in PSVR2 is incredible. These are not the kind of games I tend to want to play in VR, but my son was all about it. Gran Turismo remains the standout experience though, as driving the car and looking around is just amazing. Then, it hit us, there just isn’t a lot here to play. This device has been out for three years, and we tackled most of its software in just a few days. It is clear that support for VR on PlayStation has diminished a lot. This stinks as we were having a great time, but again we had three years’ worth of software to experience.

This is by far the biggest issue with PSVR2, the lack of software. I also cannot see it getting any better as not a lot of titles are on the way. Checking the upcoming games, I only saw a couple, which means once we tackle all the content here, it is likely to go back on the shelf until curiosity gets the better of us in a few years.

Overall, PSVR2 is an incredible experience that I think everyone should have. The problem is a lack of software, which makes the price tag a little hard to justify. You can find the headset on sale a lot, and if it fits your budget, it is more than worth checking out. Just be aware, what is available is likely most of what you will have access to going forward.
