Pearl Abyss has released a new gameplay overview for Crimson Desert Enhanced: Charting the Unknown, showing that the upcoming DLC certainly isn't short on ambition. Launching on October 29, it combines new stories for all three main characters with ocean exploration, shipbuilding, underwater adventures, romance and marriage, expanded housing, business management, and a boss-rush challenge. Even coming just over seven months after the game’s original debut, it looks like a substantial expansion of what players can do in Pywel rather than a narrowly focused story add-on.

The Great Ocean Becomes a Destination of Its Own

The expansion continues the individual journeys of Kliff, Damiane, and Oongka, with returning and new allies and enemies accompanying their respective stories. However, its largest geographical addition is the Great Ocean of Pywel, which surrounds the continent’s eastern and southern shores. Waters that players may previously have crossed on dragonback are becoming a fully explorable destination with an accompanying storyline.

After establishing the Greymane Camp, players can unlock shipbuilding, gather resources, construct a vessel, and customize it before heading out to sea. Islands offer new opportunities for exploration and encounters with hostile factions, while bringing Greymane comrades along allows players to establish additional strongholds. Enemy forces will also threaten their journeys across the water, as you'd expect from a maritime expansion.

There’s more beneath the surface, too. Players can craft diving suits and use new underwater traversal methods to explore sunken ruins, collect resources, and hunt for treasure. Between sailing, island expeditions, and diving, the ocean appears to be much more than extra space between quest markers.

Get Married, Build a Home, and Claim a Castle

Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown also substantially expands the quieter side of life in Pywel. Kliff, Damiane, and Oongka can develop relationships with certain NPCs by earning their trust, eventually progressing into romance and marriage. Trusted companions may visit the Greymane Camp to spend time together, giving the settlement a more personal dimension.

Housing goes beyond placing furniture. Players will be able to design their residence from the ground up, choosing interior layouts and positioning walls, windows, and other structural elements. For those who would rather move into something a little grander, certain liberated castles can now be claimed and their interiors decorated.

There's even a new management layer tied to liberated locations. Players can lease facilities, assign comrades and equipment, select goods to sell, and determine how to operate their businesses to increase recognition and profits. Meanwhile, combat-focused players get a successive-boss challenge that pits them against powerful enemies encountered throughout Pywel, with valuable rewards for overcoming the gauntlet.

Pearl Abyss Has Kept More Than Bug Fixes Coming

The meaty feature set of Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown is doubly notable given the studio's lightning-quick post-launch pace. By August 12, less than five months after the game's March 19 release, Pearl Abyss had already delivered 17 patches, introducing more than 20 features and content additions, 120 new mounts and pets, and 70 new outfits, equipment pieces, and items. The patches added story improvements, new character skills, difficulty settings, Boss Rematch and Re-blockade content, controller remapping, cross-save between PC and consoles, and expanded housing customization, among other things.

In other words, Pearl Abyss has spent the months since launch doing way more than addressing technical issues, which is far from common for a single player game. Several areas receiving further attention in Charting the Unknown, like housing, strongholds, and repeatable combat challenges, already benefited from that support. The DLC builds on those foundations while adding entirely new pursuits such as seafaring and marriage. Its feature list is certainly impressive; the remaining question is how well all those activities come together in practice.

We'll know next week, as Crimson Desert Enhanced: Charting the Unknown is set to release on Thursday, October 29 at 3 PM Pacific / 6 PM Eastern, following a two-week delay intended to improve polish and stability. Preorders are available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, Steam, and the Epic Games Store; preorder bonuses include the Charter's Diving Set for Kliff and Oongka and the Charter's Light Diving Set for Damiane.
