Pokémon has been around for a long time, and it has largely stayed the same. Because of this, many gamers and content creators have made their own versions of Pokémon titles to keep things fresh.

There are ROM hacks that tell the story of Pokémon from a different point of view, some that expand on specific games, and then there are those that completely change the game, turning into something else.

You have ROM hacks that make you walk the Oregon Trail, some that allow you to spin the world, and others that turn Pokémon completely medieval, but they all have one thing in common; they aren't your average Pokémon experience.

8 Pokémon SpinSpinSpin

Spin To Win

Normally, Pokémon involves a lot of battling. After all, that is the point of the game. However, the Pokémon SpinSpinSpin ROM hack is just a large puzzle adventure that takes place on an island.

It was created as part of the Team Aqua's Hideout ROM hack competition, and instead of playing as a normal protagonist, you play as Little Archie, and your quest is to replace the water faucet on your house.

The catch is that you can spin the world using your Spinda. This gives you access to different parts of the map, such as secret doors and hidden NPCs. It is an interesting concept since the world of Pokémon is often stuck at one angle.

7 Pokémon Reloaded

Real Time Battles

You don't have to imagine anymore what it would be like if Pokémon had real-time battles. After all, Pokémon Legends Z-A did that. However, what if the older Pokémon titles had real-time battles?

Pokémon Reloaded is an amazing Pokémon ROM hack that completely changes the battle system, allowing you to attack at any time by controlling your Pokémon on the field.

The top-down view of the battles is quite interesting, and it allows you to actively dodge attacks and perform counterattacks in real-time. Although the game can be a bit glitchy, it is well worth trying out if you are a fan of the real-time battle system in Legends Z-A. Just remember, this came out first.

6 Pokémon Transform

Ditto at Daycare

Welcome to Pokémon Transform: the game where you play as a Ditto in the daycare looking to complete the egg hunt. At the beginning of the game, you are dropped at the daycare and are told of your grand quest.

Afterward, you must navigate the massive area, learn different transformations, and solve puzzles. You will be required to battle along the way, but you can only use the Pokémon who you have learned to transform into.

Each Pokémon you can transform into has different abilities. For instance, Cutiefly can fit into small places, giving you access to hidden areas. These transformations will help you reach the end of the daycare where you can finally get that important egg for your trainer.

5 Aipom's Great Pirate Adventure

Pokémon Tower Defense

Have you ever wished to sail the seas of Pokémon as a pirate, collecting treasure along the way? Well, Aipom's Great Pirate Adventure is the ROM hack for you, as it changes the game to be a pirate adventure mixed with a tower defense game.

Throughout the game, you select Pokémon to be on your pirate crew, and then it somewhat turns into a game of Plants Vs. Zombies, as you place your crew in spots on a board and wait for opposing pirates to charge into battle.

After you defeat each pirate crew, you select your next destination on a map and soldier on to collect fame and fortune. It is an ROM hack that really switches up the Pokémon games, turning them into something else entirely.

4 PokéGotchi

Virtual Pet

Have you ever played with a Tamagotchi? You know, those little pocket games where you can for a virtual pet. Well, this concept has been combined with Pokémon, and the result is the PokéGotchi ROM hack.

This ROM hack changes the game, turning into a cozy gamer's dream scenario. You adopt a Fomantis and watch it grow. Your goal is to help it flourish and not starve, or worse, die.

You can watch it eat at restaurants run by Slowpoke, rest up at home, play in the park, and even gamble. You can then fill its room with all sorts of items to make it happy.

3 Pokémon Crown

Medieval Pokémon

Pokémon Crown is, by far, one of the most extensive fan games I have ever seen, with it completely overhauling Pokémon FireRed, turning it into a medieval RPG. The game features guilds, quests, and an interesting strategic battling system.

When you run into wild Pokémon, you no longer take part in turn-based battles. Instead, you choose Pokémon to place on the battlefield. From there, the Pokémon attack one another until a victor is declared. Each Pokémon has a different ability or attack, making it so you need to think about which ones to send out.

My favorite part of this ROM hack is the world, as the sprite work is fantastic, and there was so much work that went into it that it is hard not to admire the dedication.

2 The Porygon Trail

Go See a Porygon

Have you ever played The Oregon Trail? If you have, you know how difficult it can be, and how often you can surprisingly die of dysentery. All the fun, pain, and annoyance of this game has been put into the world of Pokémon through The Porygon Trail.

As you embark from your hometown to go see a Porygon on the other side of the map, you slowly make your way from point to point. In between these various destinations, you have run-ins with wild Pokémon, your team can run into trees, or even catch the obligatory dysentery.

While there is still turn-based combat, it is instead focused on building a team that you use all at once, and each Pokémon on your team has a different ability, making it more of a deck-builder-style.

1 Pokémon Homestead

Become a Pokémon Breeder

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to run the daycare in any of the Pokémon games? Well, the Pokémon Homestead ROM hack allows you to do just that, and play the role of the matchmaker.

When you start your week at the daycare, you are told that you will need to match Pokémon to possible trainers. Each day, a new trainer comes in, and you are required to pick out a Pokémon for them by the end of the day.

In the meantime, you interact with the different Pokémon at the daycare, learn about them, and raise their affinity. At the end of the day, you choose which Pokémon from the daycare best matches the trainer that came in, and then you start the process again the next day. It is a very cozy experience that is far different than your standard Pokémon game.
