An indie developer has released a game that actively encourages players to get their money back, but only if they’re skilled enough to complete it in under two hours.

Steam’s refund policy allows customers to request their money back within 14 days of purchase, provided they’ve played for less than two hours. It’s a system usually intended for people who regret buying a game, but one new release has turned it into the entire premise.

Appropriately titled Refund This Game, the indie platformer launched on October 12, challenging players to reach the end before the Steam refund window expires.

Developed by Cactile Games and dofhouse, the game takes inspiration from notoriously frustrating platformers like Getting Over It or Only Up, where a single mistake can undo hours of progress.

The goal is to climb to the top of a towering obstacle course using a pole that can stick to walls. By bending and releasing it, players can launch themselves through the environment, hopefully without plummeting back to the bottom.

Refund This Game turns Steam’s refund policy into a challenge

The developers aren’t making things easy, though, as players are given just one checkpoint, although they can retrieve it and reposition it at any time.

There’s also an achievement for finishing within the two-hour limit, giving players proof that they’ve beaten the challenge before potentially requesting their money back.

“Think you can beat our game in under two hours and earn the achievement to prove it?” reads the game’s Steam description. “Feel free to refund the game after, if you still can. It wouldn’t be a real challenge without stakes!”

Those who decide to keep their purchase can compete on an online leaderboard, comparing their completion times with other players.

The game normally costs $4.99, although it’s currently discounted to $3.99 until October 26.

Finishing the game doesn’t automatically trigger a refund. Players must still submit a request through Steam, and they’ll need to remain within Valve’s eligibility requirements.

But for anyone confident in their platforming abilities, it’s a rare game where winning could mean getting your money back.
