索尼探索让PlayStation玩家跳过漫长游戏下载直接游玩的方法
Sony is exploring a way to let PlayStation players skip long game downloads and jump straight into playing
Sony’s newly-published patent describes how PlayStation game downloads could run in the background while you play through the cloud, before switching to a local version.
Sony already lets PlayStation Plus subscribers stream supported PS5 games without downloading them first, a feature introduced in October 2023. Players can also switch between streaming and locally installed games while keeping their progress through cloud saves. However, Sony’s current system describes streaming and downloading as separate ways to launch a game.
Large downloads remain a headache, especially for players with slower connections. Sony itself points to modern games weighing between 50GB and 100GB, which can take hours to download before they’re ready to play.

Now, a recently published patent application reveals how Sony could make that waiting period far less annoying.
Sony patent could let players start playing while game downloads run in the background
A new patent application from Sony Interactive Entertainment, titled “Apparatus and Method of Application Execution,” describes a system that would let players start playing a game through cloud streaming immediately after purchasing it, while the game downloads and installs in the background.
The US application was filed on February 2, 2026, and published on October 15, 2026.
Here’s the official overview blurb of this patent: “A method can include, for executable content that a user has access to, providing a streaming instance of the executable content to a client device for immediate use, downloading a local instance of the executable content to the client device, and installing the local instance of the executable content on the client device.
“When the local instance of the executable content is installed and ready to run on the client device, the method includes selecting a swap-over point between the streaming instance and the local instance, creating a save file at the swap-over point, and downloading the save file to the client device.
“The method can also include running the local instance of the executable content in a mode that starts the executable content using the save file and transferring the user from the streaming instance to the local instance of to continue their use of the executable content.”

Here’s how it would work. Instead of waiting for a 100GB game to download, players could jump straight into the cloud version while their console handles the installation. Once the game is ready locally, Sony’s system would automatically transfer their progress from the cloud version to the installed version, without requiring them to start over or manually restart the game.
Sony calls this a “swap-over point.” According to the filing, the switch could happen during loading screens, fast travel, cutscenes, or even when players open their inventory or settings menu.
The console could prepare the installed game in the background and use a transferred save file to continue from the exact point where the streaming session stopped. Sony also proposes prioritizing streaming traffic over downloads to help prevent the background installation from interfering with gameplay.
The system could even switch players to a local version before the entire game finishes downloading, provided enough content has been installed to support their current progress.

And Sony’s idea goes beyond new game downloads.
The patent also describes letting players access major patches and DLC without waiting for them to finish downloading. For example, if an update becomes available for a game that’s already installed, the console could transfer the player’s save to a cloud version that already includes the update. Once the local installation finishes updating, the system could switch the player back to their console.
Sony explains that “the user can immediately access the updated version of the game using their current game state.”
A handoff during a loading screen would be a more useful addition than another streaming option buried in a console menu. Sony’s proposal would handle that switch automatically, though the filing acknowledges that transferring saves could introduce a brief pause.

There are some important limitations. Sony hasn’t announced this technology as an upcoming PS5 or even a PS6 feature, and the patent doesn’t say whether it would require a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. Players would also still need a reliable internet connection capable of handling cloud streaming.
