ChainDive (チェインダイブ) is a 2003 PlayStation 2 action game by Alvion, released only in Japan. This patch translates the whole game into English.

What's translated

  • All story scenes, radio messages, mission goals and training text
  • All menus, help text, memory card messages and character names
  • Text in pictures: the controller layout, stage names and mission results
  • The training demo videos, plus subtitles for the dialogue in the opening and ending movies

How to patch

  1. You need your own ChainDive (Japan) ISO: SCPS-15054, a full 1:1 dump (Windows shows it as 1,203,424 KB). CHD or CSO? Convert it back to a plain ISO first.
  2. Drag the ISO onto ChainDivePatcher.exe. It checks your ISO and saves "ChainDive (English).iso" next to it; your original stays untouched. On Mac or Linux, use the included apply_patch.py.
  3. Play it in PCSX2, no special settings needed.

Notes

  • Tested start to finish in PCSX2. A real PS2 should work too (for example, with Open PS2 Loader), but it hasn't been tested yet; reports are welcome!
  • I'm not a Japanese speaker and used a translation tool, so corrections from Japanese speakers are very welcome.
  • Known issues: slightly uneven spacing around some punctuation and in the menu help line.

No ISOs, please don't ask.

Does any know of the existence of an English translation of the text in Chaindive? I really enjoyed playing the import demo on the PlayStation Magazine Disc, Issue 79, as did one of my friends, the only thing I hate about this game is that it was never released outside of Japan. I find it hard to play, as I don't like playing games while not knowing the plot, and it would seem that a lot of effort went into the lengthy cutscenes, so it would be nice to understand them.
