Call of Duty’s biggest upgrade this year is what Infinity Ward took away. Our Modern Warfare 4 preview breaks down the changes that matter before you spend $70 on October 23: hipfire bloom is gone, omnimovement is out, and DMZ returns with a story. With staggered early access dates, 800-plus PC settings, TPM 2.0 requirements and two editions to choose from, the launch details are scattered across a dozen posts. We’ve pulled the essentials into one place, from the Korea campaign to Collateral, Kill Block and the specs your rig needs.
Modern Warfare 4 Release Date, Early Access and Pre-Load

The Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 release date is October 23, but pre-orders unlock the game in stages, so the day you can start playing depends on what you bought and which mode you care about. Here is the schedule from the official Modern Warfare 4 site and Activision’s launch posts.
| What | Date | Who gets it |
|---|---|---|
| PC pre-load | Thursday, October 15, 9AM PT (12PM ET) | Digital PC pre-orders |
| Campaign Early Access | Friday, October 16 | Standard Digital and Vault pre-orders, all platforms |
| DMZ Early Access | Tuesday, October 20 | Standard Digital and Vault pre-orders |
| Full launch | Friday, October 23 (midnight local time on PC) | Everyone |
Activision notes that early access times can shift with outages and time zones, so treat these as targets. One change from the last two years: Modern Warfare 4 is not on Game Pass at launch. Xbox now adds new Call of Duty games to the service about a year after release, so Ultimate subscribers will need to buy this one. It’s on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, with no PS4 or Xbox One version.
What’s New for Returning Players

If you played Modern Warfare III or Black Ops 7, these are the changes you will notice first in CoD MW4:
- Operators and Killstreaks are set per loadout, and Perks are back to a Pick 3 system.
- Gunny, an optional Gunsmith helper, builds Short Range, Long Range or Balanced setups from the attachments you have unlocked.
- Most weapons get at least one Apex Attachment as a final unlock.
- Smartstreaks count objective play as well as kills toward your Killstreaks.
- A movement training course at launch lets you practise Mantle Slides, Supine Slides and ledge shimmying before you jump into a match.
- Prestige splits into Regular (you keep your Create-a-Class unlocks) and Classic (a full reset with extra rewards).
- Camo progress spans Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, with three Mastery Camos to earn in each mode, nine in total.
- Crossplay and cross-progression cover every platform, including Nintendo Switch 2.
A Campaign That Leaves the Usual Battlefields

The setup, first revealed in the Modern Warfare 4 announcement, is a North Korean invasion of South Korea. You play as Private Park Hyun Jun, a young South Korean soldier facing live combat for the first time alongside his squad on collapsing front lines. Infinity Ward has said it is probably the largest Modern Warfare campaign yet, and the mission list backs that up: trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters fighting in New York, chases through Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai and city-wide assaults to retake occupied territory.
Price is the other half of the story. After Shepherd’s assassination in Modern Warfare III, Task Force 141 is disbanded when Price goes on the run, and Ghost and Gaz are sent to capture or kill him, per the Tokyo Game Show campaign trailer post. He teams up with Valeria Garza, “El Sin Nombre,” the leader of the Las Almas Cartel, while CIA Station Chief Kate Laswell stays in touch. Hanging over both storylines is a weapon of war headed for a villain known only as “The Archer.”
Infinity Ward frames Park’s arc as zero to hero and has hinted that Price is heading the other way. Ghost is already questioning his former captain’s methods, and that split inside Task Force 141 is the thread we are most curious about. The Modern Warfare 4 campaign unlocks early on October 16 for Standard Digital and Vault Edition pre-orders on every platform.
Multiplayer: No Bloom, New Loadouts and Kill Block
Multiplayer is where Modern Warfare 4 changes the most. Infinity Ward has confirmed the omnimovement system from the Black Ops games is not coming over. Movement leans on mantling, climbing and sliding, with new options like Mantle Slide (straight from a mantle into a slide), Mantle Steering, a Supine Slide that ends on your back, pipe climbing and ledge shimmying. A dedicated movement training course will be available at launch for anyone who wants to practice chaining it all together.
Ballistic Authority and the End of Bloom
The mechanical centerpiece is Ballistic Authority, a weapon-first stack covering aiming, handling, audio and visibility, sold with the promise of “no bloom, no guesswork, no doubt.” According to the multiplayer deep dive, hipfire shots now travel where the weapon is pointed, and an optional Laser Attachment shows the shot path. Sway, recoil and movement still affect accuracy, so hipfire still takes skill.
Weapons and the world now render in the same field of view, and muzzle effects are masked at your point of aim so targets stay visible during sustained fire. We’d count this as the smartest part of the pitch, because it removes the excuse that the spray was random.
Create-a-Class, Gunny and Apex Attachments

Every loadout now carries its own Operator and Killstreaks, so each class works as a complete role. Perks are back to Pick 3, with Ninja and Quick Fix returning at launch. Killstreaks become Smartstreaks, which count objective play toward your next reward. Gunny is an optional Gunsmith helper that builds Short Range, Long Range or Balanced setups from the attachments you have unlocked.
Apex Attachments are the big progression hook. They are final unlocks that change how a weapon behaves, and they don’t take up one of the regular attachment slots. Infinity Ward has shown off a fan-fire revolver, a 9mm pistol with a side-break 12-gauge and an M4 converted to fire 5.7×28 rounds. At launch, expect 33 weapons, 28 Apex Attachments, more than 500 standard attachments, 17 Killstreaks and 18 Perks.
Modes and Maps

Modern Warfare 4 launches with 12 core 6v6 maps, and returning staples include Team Deathmatch, Domination, Search and Destroy and Gunfight. The new modes are:
- Inflation: eliminations earn cash, and players carrying enough become High Value Targets whose position is revealed to the enemy team. Eliminated players drop cash that either team can pick up.
- Hijack (6v6): carry, throw or pass a Data Spike to the enemy Comm Station, then plant it to score while the defenders try to defuse it.
- Frontline (6v6): both teams always respawn at their own base, and kills made away from the enemy’s base are worth more.
- Collateral (5v5): a round-based buy mode built for Search and Destroy fans, covered below.
Kill Block is the headline map. It is built from three slabs that reconfigure between rounds, with more than 500 combinations, changing weather and sections that borrow elements from Crash, Highrise and Shoot House. Ground War returns as Combat Outpost, where teams establish Outposts to earn resources across large vehicle-and-infantry maps such as Imjin Farmland and Wolves Stadium.
Collateral Is the Mode for Search and Destroy Fans

Collateral is a 5v5 take on Search and Destroy with an economy. Teams alternate between attacking and defending two bomb sites, everyone starts with a pistol, and kills and objective play earn cash to spend between rounds. The shop covers armor and perks, equipment like Flash Grenades, Molotovs and a Riot Shield, upgraded pistols, Standard Issue weapons, Tier 1 rifles and a team-bought UAV.
If you die, you lose your loadout, though your money carries over to the next round. Respawns, Killstreaks, health regeneration and custom loadouts are all switched off. Anyone who has played Counter-Strike or Valorant will recognize the shape, and it is the most interesting competitive bet Infinity Ward is making this year.
DMZ Returns With a Story to Tell

DMZ is back as Call of Duty’s extraction mode, set in Hajin, an Exclusion Zone near the borders of Russia and the Korean Peninsula that is tied directly to the campaign’s aftermath. You deploy solo or with a squad as an off-the-books asset recovering advanced military tech, then decide how deep to push before extracting. Points of interest include an irradiated reactor, a prison complex, Hajin City and a heavily defended military base, and a radiation storm intensifies as the match runs on.
Each deployment is built around three kinds of activity, per the DMZ deep dive:
- Story Missions: narrative missions that continue the campaign plot at key points of interest across Hajin, playable solo or with a squad.
- Dynamic Operations: multi-step objectives generated for each match, from rescues to assaults on hostile forces, plus lighter Side Ops like repairing trucks or climbing radio towers.
- Free Roam: hunt elite enemy Lieutenants, scavenge for crafting materials, raid a derelict casino vault or go after rival players on the Bounty leaderboard.
Between runs you return to a Forward Operating Base with a persistent Stash, a 3D Printer for crafting gear and an MIA system that lets you pay to recover a lost Operator, so a bad extraction does not wipe your progress. Dying does not cost you XP either.
Extraction shooters are a tough business, and Krafton has already ended its PUBG: Black Budget spin-off. DMZ’s advantage is that it ships inside a game most players will already own, and Hajin is also coming to Warzone Battle Royale in Season 1. Early access to Modern Warfare 4 DMZ opens October 20 for digital pre-orders.
The PC Version Gets the Most Attention

Beenox, the Call of Duty PC lead, is working with Infinity Ward, and the settings list runs past 800 options, so set aside an evening before your first match. Upscaling covers NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR Redstone and Intel XeSS 3, with Filmic SMAA T2X as the default, and ray tracing works in Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ, according to the PC tech post.
The aim-focused extras are sub-frame mouse polling and Enhanced FOV, which is PC-exclusive and widens the view near the edges of your monitor without touching the center. Activision targets 90 FPS at Recommended specs without manual tweaks, and a built-in Benchmark Tool reports average FPS, CPU, GPU, ping and input latency with per-zone breakdowns. That is a claim to test at launch, though the tool at least lets you check it yourself.
Two practical notes before launch day. Advanced Shader Delivery precompiles shaders ahead of time, and Activision recommends installing the Xbox PC app early to use it, whichever store you buy from. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required on PC as part of RICOCHET Anti-Cheat, so anyone on an older motherboard should check those settings now.
Modern Warfare 4 PC System Requirements

| Spec | Minimum | Recommended (90 FPS, High) | Ray Tracing (4K upscaled) |
|---|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 11 64-bit | Windows 11 64-bit |
| CPU | AMD Ryzen 5 1400 / Intel Core i5-6600 | AMD Ryzen 5 3600 / Intel Core i7-8700K | AMD Ryzen 7 3700X / Intel Core i7-10700K |
| RAM | 8GB | 16GB | 32GB |
| GPU | Radeon RX 470 / GeForce GTX 970 or 1060 / Intel Arc A580 | Radeon RX 6600 XT / GeForce RTX 3060 Ti / Intel Arc B580 | Radeon RX 9070 XT / GeForce RTX 5070 Ti |
| Video memory | 3GB | 8GB | 16GB |
| Storage | 115GB SSD | 115GB SSD | 115GB SSD |
Every tier needs DirectX 12, a broadband connection and an Intel or AMD processor with AVX support. Intel Arc cards need Resizable BAR enabled, and mandatory updates may need extra storage.
Before You Pre-Order: Standard vs Vault Edition

The Modern Warfare 4 price starts at $69.99 for Standard and $99.99 for Vault, and pre-ordering either digital edition gets you Campaign Early Access, DMZ Early Access, the Hunter Killer Operator Skin, the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack and the Inner Circuit M4 Blueprint. The blueprint gets a translucent OG green finish on Xbox Series X|S and a mil-spec look everywhere else.
| Edition | Price (US) | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $69.99 | Base game plus the pre-order bonuses above |
| Vault | $99.99 | Everything in Standard, plus the Hostile Alliance and Special Forces Operator Packs, the Signature Weapon Collection (5 blueprints), one season of BlackCell and a DMZ Deployment Bonus |
Returning players can get 10% off the Modern Warfare 4 Vault Edition on pre-order if they have played a Call of Duty released in 2019 or later on the same platform account, with free-to-play and mobile games excluded. Full details are on the Modern Warfare 4 editions page.
If the Korea story is the draw, a Standard Modern Warfare 4 pre-order with its week-long campaign head start is enough. If you expect to live in multiplayer and DMZ, the Vault’s BlackCell is the part with real value, since it covers a full season of the Battle Pass.

The Verdict So Far
Modern Warfare 4 looks like Infinity Ward’s most confident pitch in years. Removing bloom, dropping omnimovement and giving every loadout its own Operator all point toward a more grounded, readable shooter, while the Korea campaign and a story-driven DMZ give it more to do than any recent Modern Warfare.
The open questions are the ones only launch can answer: how Kill Block holds up after a few hundred matches, whether DMZ keeps players around past its first season, and whether that 90 FPS PC target survives real hardware. We will know a lot more once the campaign unlocks on October 16.
