《Starfield》玩家重做核心引擎技术消除最被诟病的读盘落地

Starfield Modder Reworks Core Engine Tech to Fix Game’s Most Criticized Feature

A crafty Starfield fan has been hard at work improving the game, and has finally released an update on their long-awaited mod that removes one of the Bethesda titles' most annoying features.

As seen on ResetEra, user Frederik Wessberg posted a YouTube video showing off seamless planetary landings akin to No Man’s Sky, where players can smoothly enter and exit the atmosphere of any planet without a loading screen. The update is a huge change to Starfield’s core gameplay, with fans having long complained about the game’s abundance of immersion-breaking loading screens.

Modder Achieves What Bethesda Couldn’t By Modifying Engine

Wessberg posted a lengthy description underneath his YouTube video discussing the process of adding seamless landings, which appears to have been no small feat for the modder. He said he has spent roughly six months rebuilding Starfield’s planet-rendering technology using Creation Engine 2 in order to fully remove loading screens. The game has an active modding community which strives to improve Bethesda’s flawed space sim.

The mod supports both manual flight and autopilot, meaning players can move around the ship's interior while the ship lands automatically—something entirely impossible in vanilla Starfield. Players can also land directly on ocean surfaces too, removing previous restrictions that allowed ships to descend only on pre-selected tiles.

Like No Man’s Sky, the modder has added atmospheric effects to create a realistic entry, including heat-shield burn and ash effects, as well as atmospheric scattering that is built using actual planet composition data. Wessberg also had to overhaul Starfield’s 2D rendering of planets, instead implementing 3D space-to-surface rendering from scratch to make entering the atmosphere as realistic as possible.

Despite complaints about Starfield from the wider community, Wessberg praised the game as “amazingly physically accurate, and in many ways a true space simulator” but says the depth and complexity of its systems are never truly revealed to the player because of its loading screens and traversal limitations. Thankfully, Wessberg said he was able to “leverage” the behind-the-scenes power to make his mod come to life.

Bridging The Gap Between Starfield and No Man’s Sky

Other space simulators like No Man’s Sky and Star Citizen have built their core game loops around real-time atmospheric entry, so when Starfield launched in 2023, its segmented fast-travel system and limited player freedom drew fan ire and made the game feel dated from day one.

While Bethesda itself has tried to improve the game through updates, Starfield’s recent PS5 release earlier this year laid bare the problems the space sim still faced. In DualShockers’ own review, Scott Baird said Starfield was “a universe of wasted potential” and that it paradoxically feels “somehow bloated and yet empty, overly complex and yet lacking.”

Regardless of the flak, players are taking the game’s future into their own hands through massive user mods like Wessberg’s, even when it looks like Bethesda has given up on fixing player issues. The game maker originally cited structural engine stability and object permanent problems as the reason for including loading screens between space and planets, but diligent fans are showing that Creation Engine 2 can be stretched much further than Bethesda apparently says.

Wessberg’s work has won huge praise online, with comments flooding in under his YouTube video thanking him for his work and urging Bethesda to hire him. The project is currently a work-in-progress and only available on PC using the Starfield Script Extender.
