PS5 Slim 卡在 SAFE MODE(错误码 CE-120239-7)故障讨论

PS5 Slim stuck in SAFE MODE (CE-120239-7)

AI 导读

多名用户在 Gbatemp 反映 PS5 Slim(CFI-2016,主板 EDM-040)卡在 SAFE MODE,重装系统时在 24% 或 29% 失败并报 CE-120239-7。

正文

Dear All,

I have a PS5 Slim (CFI-2016) with disc drive which is stuck in SAFE MODE.
When it boots, it goes straight to SAFE MODE with only option 8 available > Reinstall System (with a USB key and the recovery file).
Reinstall process fails systematically at 24% with error CE-120239-7 which is totally unknown on Internet.

Force booting into SAFE MODE (by keeping power button pressed for 7 seconds) shows all 8 usual options.
I managed to get console reinstalling latest system using this procedure :

  • Force boot into SAFE MODE (push power button 7 seconds)
  • Choose option 3 (Repair storage)
  • Console reboots
  • Check storage runs
  • Console reboots
  • Menu asks directly to insert a USB stick with recovery file
  • Reinstallation process goes fine
  • Console reboots
  • Finally reach PS5 menu 100% working

Anyway, disc drive seems to be working (takes/ejects discs and seems to recognize them 100%), but not showing any games on PS5 menu.

I don't know what to think about this case.
Anyone faced such a situation ?

Hi, I'm experiencing exactly the same issue. I bought this unit from a well-known website, and it already had this problem. I believe (although I could be wrong) that the error occurring during the firmware reinstallation is due to some kind of check, possibly related to the part where the disc drive is connected.

Another strange thing I noticed is that after restoring the firmware from Safe Mode, if the drive is connected, not only does the spinning disc logo not appear, but when trying to shut down the console, the delay between the shutdown request and the actual power-off is significantly longer — as if it's freezing or hanging.

I’ve already tried replacing the CXD90069GG and reballing the four SSD modules along with their controller, but that didn’t change anything. The only thing I did notice is that on the motherboard connector, there are two points with no voltage drop at all, but I haven’t been able to figure out where they are connected.

were you able to understand something?

I attach an image of the connector

thank you all

Hey, thanks for your reply, I thought I was the only one with this problem.

Some feelings related to your comments :

  • Error occurring during the firmware reinstallation is due to some kind of check
    • Yeah, pretty sure it is the case. On my side I took notice of something really strange :
      • When I first tried to restore firmware on the console, it was failing at 24%
      • Some testing days later, it is now failing at 29%
      • NOTE : Not the same firmware version between both facts, anyway ... maybe there is something interesting here
    • Are you experiencing the same behavior as I described in my post with your console ?
  • on the motherboard connector, there are two points with no voltage drop at all, but I haven’t been able to figure out where they are connected
    • I have multiple PS5 Slim with same motherboard here (EDM-040) the only one which still suffers from a problem is the on I've created this post for.
    • I will test these voltages when I'll have the time to.

By side of that, I noticed some other strange/weir behavior with downloaded games from PSN : I can't run/play any single one of them.
As soon I try to run/play a downloaded game (except

Astro's playground

) , I systematically get this error message :
Can't use this content
Can't connect to the server to verify your license. Wait a while, and then try again
Can't use this content. Can't connect to the server to verify your license..JPEG
By side of that, I tried the "restore licenses" path, but it end up systematically with this error (CE-105628-2) :
Restore licenses - Something went wrong. (CE-105628-2).JPEG
Anyway, regarding "Astro's playground", it starts fine until some point where it ends up crashing with this error (CE-108255-1) :
Something went wrong with this game or app (CE-108255-1).JPEG
NOTE : it crashes systematically at the same point.

I have some fears that this console might be partially banned from PSN but strangely, when I check in "Connection status" panel, the PSN reports as "Signed in" like if everything was totally perfect.

Some assumptions :

  • Could this error be related to disc drive ?
    • In that case, why after removing the disc drive, the error persists ?
    • What does the disc drive would have to do with the fact of running/playing downloaded games from PSN ?
    • A PS5 Slim can be delivered with its disc drive but this disc drive can be removed from it later on without any problem logically
  • Could this error be related to some hardware problem ?
    • Pretty sure it does !
    • I was suspecting the North Bridge (because it looks to be concentrating disc drive / TPM signals) >>> You already replaced it and got no better results
    • Maybe some shorts somewhere on the motherboard >>> Didn't tested all fuses yet, but will do on next time I get my hands on this console
    • NOR (BIOS) inconsistencies ? >>> I extracted the NOR/BIOS chip contents multiple times and compared, I have a good copy of it, anyway, we don't have a tool yet to verify it's integrity (PS5 NOR Modifier from TheCod3r only works on FAT PS5 models)
      • Anyway, as I do have multiple PS5 Slim with EDM-040, I should be able to do some comparisons between NOR/BIOS extracts

Looking forward to make some progress down this road.

thank you all

What do you mean by "there are two points with no voltage drop at all" ?
Can you please give more details on your test process ?

  • Multimeter mode
  • Console powered ON / STANDBY / REST / OFF plugged / OFF unplugged
  • Etc ...

I can proceed with the same test on 2 PS5 Slim EDM-040 :

  • One with disc drive > 100% working
  • Another one with disc drive > Having the infamous problem of this thread's subject

Thanks

Here are some measurements I did on a 100% working PS5 Slim, EDM-040 :

  • Resistance mode
  • Continuity mode
  • Diode mode

EDM-040 - Disc Drive Connector - Resistance mode.png

EDM-040 - Disc Drive Connector - Diode mode.png

I will cross compare on the non working PS5 tomorrow and report my findings.

Hi, the console I have on hand doesn’t show any saved errors in the UART.

Thanks for the measurements. Tomorrow evening, I’ll try to compare them with those from my own console.

For now, I’ve set this console aside because the issue is really strange — it seems like there’s a specific type of block.

I’ve performed a few tests:

  • When I try to initialize the console from its dashboard, the process stops at 30%, and I end up in exactly the same state as when it was handed to me. I have to force boot into Safe Mode (by holding the power button for 7 seconds at startup) and perform a system restart. In that case, even though the process stops at 30%, I’m still able to access the initial setup screen.
  • After setup, the initial warning about terms and safety remains in English, even though I’ve set the language to Italian (which is unusual behavior).
  • On the hardware side, I’ve checked all the fuses and they’re OK. In the area where the disc drive is connected, there are no capacitors shorted to ground. So, at this point, it doesn’t seem like there’s any hardware issue with this console. I performed the checks in diode mode.

Over the next few days, I’ll try comparing the tables you provided and will post the results.

Thanks a lot!

Thanks for your measurements @stetofix .
I don't end up with the exact same measurements on a working PS5 Slim EDM-040 on my side.
Maybe it's because I have done my measurements with console electrically uplugged from power outlet for a while + PSU still connected to motherboard.

I made some additional tests this morning :

  • Disc Drive connector measurements comparison between both EDM-040 consoles (working and non-working) : same (at least powered off and unplugged from wall outlet)
  • As @asdrubale stated, changing console language doesn't change first message in PS5 menu at boot time (safety warning/disclaimer) : I put my non-working PS5 to French and rebooted the console here is the first message I'm seeing at boot time :

    Non-working console
PS5 menu - First text at boot time.JPEG

    Working console
PS5 menu - First text at boot time.JPEG

We do have a difference here ... is that because of SAFE MODE failing the restoration process ... I don't know yet.
Anyway, looks like restoring the system works after SAFE MODE (forced) > repair storage > reboot > ask for USB stick sith restore file from PS site

  • NOR compare of both consoles with same firmware version (25.05-11.60.00.05-00.00.00.0.1)
Dozens of differencies ... can't really point out if something is wrong or not at that stage.
    I can identify some interesting sequencies/strings :
    • Both consoles (working and non-working)
      • Starting at 0x001C73E0 : I can see "PKG-3486" on both NOR dumps
      • Starting at 0x001C7200 and 0x001C7350 : 16 bytes long corresponding to the string printed on motherboard
    • Only on the non-working console
      • Starting at 0x001C7330 (between both 16 bytes long string printed on motherboard) : I can see another 16 bytes long string which looks like PS5GNP0001234567 (where 1234567 corresponds to numbers)
  • After restoring the console (using the hard way : SAFE MODE forced > repair storage > etc ...), I created a new PSN account just to be sure, the problem wasn't linked with my original account (which I use on many other consoles without any problem) >>> Nothing better, still facing the same error :
    • Can't use this content. Can't connect to the server to verify your license..JPEG
      Can't use this content.
Can't connect to the server to verify your license. Wait a while, and then try again.
  • Did some tests with the disc drive and installed it in my working console ... so far so good, when it boots up with the new disc drive, it shows these screens for registering the disc drive :
    Disc Drive Registration - 01.JPEGDisc Drive Registration - 02.JPEGDisc Drive Registration - 03.JPEG

This doesn't apply to the non-working console as nothing shows up in PS5 menu when booting up the console.
It seems no disc drive is connected at that time (even if it works, takes/reads/ejects discs fine) until I put the console in REST MODE, then wake it up. At that time, I can immediately see the following notification showing up in the menu :
Can't use your disc drive - Menu.JPEGCan't use your disc drive - Notification.JPEG

  • On the non-working console, when disc drive is onboard, system is noticeably slower when "powering off" or "entering rest mode"
Ex. : Powering off /or/ entering into rest mode usually takes between 10-15 seconds
    >>> On the non-working console, it can take ~1 minute with multiple LED stages :
    • Blinking white
    • Blinking orange
    • Orange

By any chance this PS5 can be suffering from a hardware problem that still allows it to boot up fine and works quite fine up until some stage ?

I'm suspecting that the PS5 RESET using an USB-stick is not restoring what it needs/should ... or is not doing it 100% on the whole storage.

I had a PS5 Slim. Similar case. Stuck on safe mode. SSD controller replaced, BIOS deeply corrupted, KIBAN ID not available, neither wifi MAC. I burnt a dump from internet, and able to install USB update and have a complete boot. As in your case, not working neither discs or online content.

Thanks foryour feedback on that one, I'm feeling that I'm alone in the dark with this PS5
I have been having a long talk with @stetofix by side of this discussion.

Since yesterday, I got my hands on some confirmed working NOR dump for this infamous PS5 Slim.

3 beeps at power plug connection (after some seconds)

@Barkillero : Please tell me that you replaced the NOR chip, reflashed with a correct NOR dump (like I did) and everything went back to normal ? :grog:

Did you changed the LAN MAC at 0x001C4020 with the both at 0x001C403E and 0x001C403F?

I haven’t had much time to dedicate to this console lately, but I’ve still been working intermittently on analyzing the issue. I’m also quite sure there’s no hardware problem — I compared the entire board with another one that’s fully working! I’ll need to do a dump of the NOR, and I might post it here afterward. But I wonder: wouldn’t it be enough to just use The Cod3r’s NOR Modifier in that case?

Did you changed the LAN MAC at 0x001C4020 with the both at 0x001C403E and 0x001C403F?

Well, didn't know I had to actually :rofl2:
After changing these 2 bytes >>> no more 3 beeps after pluging power.
Console boots then arrived in PS5 MENU > but still suffers from same behavior.
Tried SAFE MODE (forced) > option #8 (reinstall system software) > Failed at 29% with same error code CE-120239-7.
I'm really wondering if it might be some bad NOR chip as when I tried to write on it (without erasing + blank checking), I got an error in the very first bytes (repeatable).
I've read somewhere on tronicsfix forum that console might fails to reinstall system software due to bad SSD chips/controller/RAM or just a bad NOR chip.
As I've put SSD storage to test by filling it up, if there is a problem it is surely not with controller or RAM, maybe on the non-replaceable SSD chips but that would indicate a final death for this console if it is the case.

Found these interesting threads googling around :

I will probably give the NOR chip replacement a test at that stage

Thanks foryour feedback on that one, I'm feeling that I'm alone in the dark with this PS5
I have been having a long talk with @stetofix by side of this discussion.

Since yesterday, I got my hands on some confirmed working NOR dump for this infamous PS5 Slim.
Modified the necessary fields but systematically got 3 beeps after flash & verify.

Here are my notes about the last flash I did (note : same souhtbridge 69GG, same wifi module, etc ...)

Code:

===== MODIFIED / ADDED =====
1C4020 LAN MAC
1C7200 Motherboard S/N
1C7210 Console S/N (written on plastic case) >>> only FF bytes were present in working console (took what was available on plastic case which might not be the right one maybe ?)
1C73C0 2.4Ghz WiFi MAC (written on WiFi module)
1C73C6 5.0Ghz WiFi MAC (Equals to 2.4Ghz WiFi MAC address +1)
1C73CC Bluetooth MAC (Equals to 2.4Ghz WiFi MAC address +2

===== NOT TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT FROM ORIGINAL NOR =====
1C7330 S/N beginning with PS5GNP000XXXXXXX (XXXXXXX = numbers)
1C7350 Motherboard S/N (again)

===== KEPT IN DESTINATION NOR =====
1C7250 Model Code / Product Code
1C7260 Soc Unique ID

Unfortunately not. First thing I did was to replace the SSD IC controller (CXD90070GG), but same behavious. Stuck on safe mode. UART didn't gave to me any significant info. So I desoldered the winbond NOR IC, and dump the info. Checking i with PS5 wee tool pro... corrupted. MBR2 ko, missing wifi MAC, missing KIBAN ID, missing console info, missing console serial... There was no way to recover it. So I start to google... and found a dump of a ECM-041. I was able to reinstall software beyond safe mode. But the result.... the issue with the license, as you point. Both trying to download from PSN -both, purchased games or even ROBLOX, the free ones-. Trying with discs...didn't recognize neither PS4 nor PS5 discs. Yesterday I spent almost the whole day doing test-and-error trials. The best thing I was able to reach was the serial number and board ID on the NOR, MAC on wired, wifi, bluetooth... and KIBAN from downloaded dump. The disc logo appears when I load a disc. Recognizes a DVD...but nothing else. One weird thing.... checking the NOR, shows "no BD", but it is activated. At this point, not knowing how to proceed.

Who messes up at that point in the NOR of these consoles ?
I’m really wonderikg what the hell happened in these consoles.
Are there some specific consoles which were not standard ones.

How did you managed to get the disc-drive mostly running ?
Was it just by flashing a NOR like I did ?

Here I am, this is the dump of my memory nor, practically it is all corrupted, can I recover the serial number from the ps5 case, sku from the ps5 pcb, the wifi mac address by perishing it from its bga (I have to put 3, but I only see 1 on the bga, what should I put in the others)? I can't recover the board id, where do I get it?

Bonjour,

I made the necessary changes starting from the original BIOS, because if I try to load a dump from another console with a different PKG, I only hear the 3 beeps. I changed and entered the serial number, SKU, Wi-Fi MAC, etc. The console boots, but the problem persists. It would be very helpful to find a dump with PKG 3486. It's likely that the serial number printed on the case doesn't match the motherboard I actually have.

I give up, this PS5 is beyond repair. I tried a dump from another console, it boots, installs the software, but then it always does the same thing. Maybe the external plastic isn't from this motherboard? Or is there another problem? Or is there a problem with the SSD storage? Because it can't even initialize immediately afterward.

the nor was corrupt, now it is not anymore, and in any case the problem remains

Any UART error codes were present in the console on first diag ?

On my side I had these : 80930130, 80931103 and 80930110 ... which are absolutely still unknown right now.
If I take a look of the known ones, they are close to the ones beginning with "SSD PMIC error (power failure/short circuit) (DA9081 blablabla"
I will give a try to solder some probing wires on the voltage rails of the DA9081 chip and plug them on my oscilloscope just to be sure everything is fine on this side.

By side of that, I do have a PKG-3486 PS5 slim 100% working and NOR contents look like the same as the non-working one.

@ricou1964 : Regarding the video you attached in your post, the sign of corrupted RAM chip(s) is clear.
In my/our scenario, here are my thoughts :

  • Maybe a SSD RAM chip problem >>> no one tried to reflow/reball/replace this chip for now here
  • Maybe a dying NOR chip problem >>> as some of you pinpointed in this post, low chances here
  • Maybe a reserved storage corrupted (contents speaking) or reserved storage chip(s) dying >>> any chance to access contents of this reserved storage ?
  • Maybe a dying/unstable DA9081 chip >>> Will try to probe the voltages

In order to have a working NOR on this damn console, I had to port the following values to a known working NOR dump :

  • 1C4020 LAN MAC
  • 1C403E LAN MAC checksum
  • 1C403F LAN MAC checksum
  • 1C7200 Motherboard S/N
  • 1C7210 Console S/N (written on plastic case) >>> only FF bytes were present in working console (took what was available on plastic case which might not be the right one maybe ?)
  • 1C73C0 2.4Ghz WiFi MAC (written on WiFi module)
  • 1C73C6 5.0Ghz WiFi MAC (Equals to 2.4Ghz WiFi MAC address +1)
  • 1C73CC Bluetooth MAC (Equals to 2.4Ghz WiFi MAC address +2

I let you try this method and/or chip(s) reflow/reballing/replacement and let's discuss here after that.

Watched the video again to understand the whole "Reinstall System Software" process steps ... and noticed something !

SAFE MODE steps for option 8 (reinstall system software)

  1. First it starts with Press PS button blablabla
    01 - Press PS button.png
  2. Option 8 selection
    02 - Option 8 (reinstall system software).png
  3. Asks for USB drive with necessary PUP reinstallation file (can indicate a minimum version)
03 - Connect USB drive (min ver indicated).png
  4. Loads PUP file from USB stick
    04 - Loading PUP file from USB.png
  5. Reset confirmation
    05 - Reset confirmation.png
  6. Show "Resetting to factory defaults..." up until 19%
    06a - Resetting to factory defaults 19percent.png
... Then suddenly jumps to 100% <<<<< THIS IS WHERE MINE STOPS at 29% with error "Can't reset your console" > CE-120239-7
06b - Resetting to factory defaults jumps from 19 to 100percent.png
  7. Moves to "Preparing to update system software..." up until 42%
07a - Preparing to update system software 42percent.png
... Then suddenly jumps to 100%
07b - Preparing to update system software 100percent.png
  8. Shows "Installing" which makes its trip from 0 to 100 percent gradually
    08a - Installing long at 4percent.png 08b - Installing 100percent.png
  9. Reboots for the 1st time
  10. Shows "Please wait..." with a horizontal scrolling bar moving continually
    09 - After 1st reboot - Please wait.png
  11. Shows "Installing the update file..." which makes its trip from 0 to 100 percent gradually
    10 - Please wait at 100percent.png
  12. Reboots for the 2nd time
  13. Arrives in PS5 MENU and shows the initialization screen with first animation
    11 - After 2nd reboot - PS5 MENU first initialization.png

So on my side, process stops at step #6 and instead of jumping from 19 to 100 percent, it continues past 19 and fails at 29.

I have some questions here :

  • What are the actions taken at the "Resetting to factory defaults..." step ?
    • Is it the NOR which gets written/read ?
    • Is it the SSD storage which gets written/read ?
    • Is it the RESERVED SSD storage which gets written/read ?

Do we have some possibilities to identify what is taking place at that time ?
Are some logs being populated somewhere ?
Can we enable some bitset in NOR in order to get some log outputed to USB flash (keeping in mind UART error logs are empty at that time) ?

Thanks !

Hi SimKard, before seeing that the NOR was corrupt, I had already replaced the southbridge cxd90069gg and the SSD controller, which were also replaced, because the various BD player signals pass through the southbridge, but as you can see this did not solve anything! Also because the one removed ended up on another PS5 and works perfectly, I also removed the 4 SSD modules (be careful they must be put back in exactly the same position) redid the solder balls and re-soldered them! but this did not allow me to solve the problem, from your last post where you attach the images, I get exactly the same problem, after flashing the correct NOR with the data of the "bricked" console only that in my case the writings were in German, probably this depends on the bump I used!

once the installation is finished, if you try to go into system / reset the console it systematically fails at 29%

The fact that the SAFE MODE is is German is because this information is surely stored somewhere (else than in the NOR).

So if I summarize, on your side you already did :

  • Replaced the SouthBridge >>> no results
  • Replaced the SSD controler >>> no results
  • Replaced the SSD storage chips (replaceable ones) >>> no results
  • Reflowed + Reballed reserved storage SSD chips >>> no results

Fact : We get exact same results : reset PS5 fails at 29% with the damn CE-120239-7 error !

Can you please test this on your console ? I want to know if we have precisely the same problem :

  • Download Astro's playground and try to play it >>> On my side, during the game, after controller test (5 steps), there is an animation which flows around PS5 3D model >>> goes for a black screen (probably to load some contents) then sometimes I can see the 3D scene for 1 or 2 seconds (or not at all) then only game crash (not the whole system) with error CE-108255-1
  • Check your UART errors if any and please report them here

NOTE : Something is telling me that as soon as console wants to draw some current, something wrong happens and fails.

Things that need to be tested :

  • Check DA9081 voltages >>> Precisely at time of Astro's Playground failure during 1st 3D scene where game crashes
  • Replace / Reflow / Reball SSD DDR4 RAM chip "K4A4G085WF-BCTD" (close to the SSD controller) >>> Can you try it on your side (I don't have much experience yet with reflowing/reballing ICs) ?
    IMG_6930.JPEG
  • Replace / Reflow / Reball GDDR6 RAM chips
  • I found out the ribbon cable (50pin attaching motherboard to power&USBC panel) had damaged pins getting in contact with each other >>> Solved but no changes but maybe this has damaged some power IC(s in the meantime
  • Testing Vcore voltage stability >>> Precisely at time of Astro's Playground failure during 1st 3D scene where game crashes

Upcoming conclusions :

  • If Astro's Playground crashes at the precise same location on your side, both consoles are surely impacted by the same problem.
  • Triming down hardware possibilities I would say that if voltages are OK, we are heading to a software problem which is probably taking place on the internal reserved storage that doesn't get wiped out at RESET PS5 (Reinstall System Software) time.
  • I know there are backup partitions on SSD so we may have some luck here, but how can we switch from one partition to another ... I really don't know.
    • I bought PS5 Wee Tools Pro and it includes a possibility to select the Active Slot (A or B) but I don't know if it relates to NOR or SSD, I have posted a question about that on the GitHub page BTW.

After these tests, we might just use/sell these consoles for part unfortunately.
