Hello Games is bringing No Man's Sky to Apple's iOS mobile devices (iPhone and iPad) very soon. The space exploration game will release on iPhone and iPad on October 28, with pre-orders opening today, Monday, October 12, as part of the App Store's Indie Games Week event. It will also be free to try at launch.

According to studio founder Sean Murray, the project started as something of a dare within the team, as it seemed like an almost impossible challenge, not unlike the game's Nintendo Switch and VR ports. Crucially, this is not a cut-down port. Murray was keen to stress that iOS players get virtually everything:

It is the full universe to explore, complete with over forty major updates, including, COSMOS, which came out just a few weeks ago. It even includes our most ambitious updates like Voyagers from last year, which introduced the ability to build your own big rig starships (and which saw our player numbers jump to their highest levels since launch!).

However, a couple of major features are missing from the iOS version of No Man's Sky, at least at launch. Just like with the Switch port, multiplayer and settlements won't be available at first, though Murray suggested that, based on feedback and player numbers, this version might eventually get them. Still, the game runs even on iPhone 11 and 3rd-generation iPad Air and above devices, which is no small feat. And Murray also promised a small file size and relatively low impact on battery life:

The file size of No Man’s Sky comes in at under 5GB! It won’t use up all the storage space on your phone and it’s downloadable direct from the App Store in one click. Perhaps most importantly we’ve put tons of work into battery life and thermodynamics, and we’re super proud that No Man’s Sky can be enjoyed for really long comfortable play sessions.

One of the main issues with porting a PC or console game to mobile is adapting controls. According to Murray, the studio completely rebuilt touch controls to ensure it would feel great on these devices. Users can also use controllers, mouse and keyboard (only on iPad), and cast the game to a TV screen.

That means new players on iPhone and iPad will soon be jumping into a game that has now had a full decade of updates since its rocky 2016 launch, including the most recent, COSMOS, which lets players own and manage their own space station.
