The film’s box office haul got a major boost from China, as the movie earned USD 40.6 million there – the best opening for a horror film in the past two years. Resident Evil also opened in Japan recently, though it earned a more modest USD 3.6 million.

Thanks to its box office haul, the latest Resident Evil live-action movie is now the highest-grossing film by Zach Cregger, beating last year’s Weapons, which earned USD 270 million worldwide. Not only that, but this film is now also the top-grossing Resident Evil movie of all time, beating Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which previously held that record with a total USD 314.4 million haul.

The box office success of Resident Evil isn’t too surprising, considering that it’s still one of the most popular horror IPs globally, not to mention that Cregger’s take on the franchise has gotten great reviews from critics and fans.

Even though some fans would’ve wanted to see characters from the games appear, many have praised the film for capturing the feeling of playing an RE game. Hopefully, this movie’s success means we’ll get a sequel with a similar style in the future.

2026 is definitely the year of Resident Evil, as Requiem has also become one of this year’s top-selling games. The franchise’s success couldn’t have come at a better time, as 2026 marks the anniversary of Resident Evil.
