Groundbreaking horror-fantasyaction-adventures launch for the first time digitally October 26th!
London, United Kingdom – October 19th, 2026 – Boutique publisher SNEG, in partnership with Andrew Spencer Studios, have just released demos for the classic survival horror adventures Ecstatica 1 & 2 for Steam Next Fest. Both titles will launch just in time for Halloween on October 26th for Steam and GOG. Each game will be $14.99 USD / £12.49 GBP / €14.99 EUR separately, or discounted as a bundle including both titles for $19.99 USD / £16.75 GBP / €19.99 USD.
Originally released in 1994 by British developer Andrew Spencer Studios, and published by Psygnosis, Ecstatica is a pioneering survival-horror adventure where horror meets 90s edginess and absurd British humour set in the demon-cursed medieval village of Tirich. Upon stopping for some water, the player character finds themself stalked by an unkillable werewolf.
Ecstatica
Unique for its time, and still unusual today, Ecstatica features an immersive, movie-like experience with no UI, prompts, or quest logs. Utilizing cinematic fixed camera angles, gameplay is focused on puzzles over combat, as you must use your wits to escape your lupine pursuer. Enemy spawn points and encounters change with every run, offering infinite replayability. Expect to die a lot… or get turned into a frog. In 1994 the genre of survival horror had yet to be codified, so anything and everything could happen!
Running on its original 1994 engine, Ecstatica features unique ellipsoid graphics. While most early-90s developers built 3D worlds from polygons, Andrew Spencer Studios used ellipsoids for a more organic, realistic look. Polygons became the industry standard, but Ecstatica remains a fascinating alternative path for 3D graphics and its unusual look still stands out today.
Ecstatica II
Ecstatica II followed in 1997, and this dark fantasy action-adventure built on its cult predecessor with a far larger world, featuring over 1,100 hand-chosen cinematic camera angles – all rendered in Andrew Spencer’s unmistakable ellipsoid style. Following the events of the first game, the hero returns home to find his realm ravaged by an evil archmage. He must defeat him, rescue the sorceress Ecstatica and reclaim his kingdom. Offering a grittier, gorier tone, and a greater focus on hack-and-slash combat, players must utilize potions and spells as they journey through this cursed realm.
This marks the first time these long-lost gems of late-’90s PC action-adventures have been available digitally, making them far easier for modern players to discover. The re-released versions of both titles not only ensures that they run smoothly on modern systems, while adding a number of improvements, including full controller support and the ability to switch between different graphics modes (e.g. DOS, Windows 95, and Software mode) on the fly to compare them in real time. These re-releases also feature full Steam support, including Achievements and Cloud Saves, and are being fully playable on Steam Deck.
“Ecstatica 1 & 2 are incredible games that are unlike anything that have come out before or since,” said Artem Shchuiko, Director at SNEG. “They are bold, imaginative titles with ideas and a visual identity that can still surprise players today, but for years they’ve been relegated to old operating systems that made them difficult for the average player to access. It really means a lot to us to bring them back for those who missed out on them – and for players who may not have even been born when they first premiered.”
