Epic Games has reportedly delayed a yet-to-be-revealed shooter inspired by the Disney universe. What’s more, the game is thought to be transitioning to an AI-first model.
Epic Games has already collaborated with Disney in the form of releasing its annual Fortnite Star Wars events, rolling out Marvel-themed seasons, and releasing crossover skins in the store. In recent times, the partnership between the two entertainment giants has increased to bring about more playable Disney experiences.
In 2024, it was announced that The Walt Disney Company and Epic Games would enter a partnership to deliver an all-new games and entertainment universe that will further expand the Disney portfolio. Disney also invested $1.5 billion to acquire an equity stake in Epic Games along with this multiyear project.
Despite this, in March of this year, Epic Games laid off over 1,000 employees, citing a downturn in Fortnite engagement that started in 2025, causing the company to spend more money than they were making.
Calling Into Question That Disney Magic
According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Epic Games has delayed the release of an unannounced shooter game featuring characters from Marvel and Star Wars, made in collaboration with Walt Disney Company, and has told the developers working on the project to use more artificial intelligence tools to finish the game, according to those familiar with the project.
The game was targeting a March release date, but following the delay, no new launch date has reportedly been communicated, said Bloomberg’s sources. Developers on the game were supposedly instructed to implement an “AI first” production model using tools such as Anthropic’s Claude. The role humans then play is to manage and guide that work.
In fact, “no more hand-written code” is what one of the game’s directors told staff in an internal message reviewed by Bloomberg. The director added that all art for the game would be “generated with full AI workflows.”
Disney also invested $1.5 billion to acquire an equity stake in Epic Games along with this multi-year project.
Jake Jones, Communications Director at Epic Games, provided a statement to Bloomberg News, saying: "We’re embracing AI-accelerated development, led by Epic developers who are the visionaries and creative drivers for everything we do.”
Notably, Disney is yet to respond to Bloomberg’s request for comment, so it will be interesting to learn about Disney’s stance on the use of AI, and whether it matches that of Epic Games.
However, according to Bloomberg’s sources, the announcement left some developers shocked at Epic Games. Some even made jokes about how they should handle errors produced by the AI, asking if they should ask Claude to fix its own mistakes.
Considering the fact that Epic Games themselves have already confirmed that they use Generative AI tools to create skins and locations in Fortnite, it’s hardly surprising that they would be eager to implement it in future projects.
The use of AI in video games remains controversial among developers and players alike. If Epic Games doesn’t roll back the decision, this will mark the first time a major games company has created and shipped a game with AI at the forefront of development.
The backlash this move is likely to receive from those working on the project and gamers may prompt Epic Games to reverse their decision. Due to Disney’s involvement and the popularity of Marvel and Star Wars, it’s unlikely Epic Games will want to miss the mark on this one, but only time will tell.
