Currently we have talks about this fragmented over different topics, so I thought it might be time for a consolidated one.

Valve announced the Launch of their new hardware trilogy in 2025, The new Steam Controller, The Steam Machine and the Steam Frame - since then we continued on our cursed AI timeline and the launch of the products was affected by the RAM apocalypse and SSD price hike.
If you're interested in the Steam Machine, you can register your interest on the Steam Store. Currently, you're gonna land on a Reservation list, it's expected that you're not gonna get one for the rest of the year, wait times are rather long at the moment.

If you wanna enable it for games, if the game is already using FSR 3 or higher, simply use Proton Experimental when you start the game - if it doesn't, use Optiscaler and place it in the games exe folder. Instructions on the linked Github page.
FAQ
What does the Steam Machine do?
Imagine a docked Steam Deck but with more power ~6x or around a PS5. It offers up to 4k/60 gameplay on your TV - but it's also/still a full PC in a tiny form factor running Linux/SteamOS. It can handle most PC related tasks that you throw at it.
Can I build it myself?
Not in this form factor, but you can absolutely build a Small Form Factor PC for your living room that uses the same OS.
Here's the OTs for these two topics:
- SteamOS |OT| Everything (except Windows) is a Steam Machine with SteamOS 3.8
- Small Form Factor "Gaming" PC Thread (AKA HTPC)
How do I know if a game will run?
Check out this page for the Steam Machine in particular: https://steammachinelife.com/
And this one if you wanna know if games run on Linux/Proton in general: https://www.protondb.com/
What is this OT for?
This OT is meant for discussion and information about the Steam Machine and a place to talk about what you can do with it. Troubleshooting inclusive.
Let me know if I missed something crucial or if you have a better title for this OT.

There are so few Steam Machine impressions by people who own it out there, really makes me wonder how many units Valve has been even shipping.
Paper launch vibes, but i guess it makes sense considering the price and the demand situation.
Is it possible to use the SteamDeck as a Steam Machine controller ?
Thanks for making this.
Is the machine likely to be any better than a steam deck for streaming from a host gaming pc
I think they are cool and not really particularly overpriced if you grade them on the curve known as reality. I'm currently fine with my existing PC being hooked up to my TV though (the big tower is a convenient shelf), so not this time around for me.

Have honestly not tried that yet but that would be interested, especially for some emulation cases.
Personally, I feel like the mode they used for the Steam Machine raffle was the worst case scenario. Giving 3 days to register while not weighting in some way or form meant that basically everyone got to register with even only the faintest interest in the Steam Machine. A lot of people got picked first that were expecting to be chosen way later - and seeing that the Steam Machine makes quite a bit of money on a resale, you don't have to be a professional scalper in this economy to take advantage of that while enthusiasts didn't get theirs.
It probably would have worked better for most people on the forum if they had chosen a first come first serve way. People by now know how to add things to their checkout before it goes on sale and would have taken the time to be there in the first hour.
Thanks for making this.

If the Steam Machine is LAN wired then theoretically it could be better.

If you want to do more stuff with it and also play games natively, then it's probably better than the Steam Deck depending on the game.
Is that your only use case? Then the Steam Deck Docked with a wired connection works very well already. Doesn't look as neat and doesn't have CEC but you can use it for undocked play or streaming too.
I know it's too expensive, but Valve's hardware and Steam OS is so nice I find myself yearning for one.
Mine came in the mail a week ago, but finally got home from vacation and put this bad boy together yesterday. I'm probably a different use case than most, I just wanted it for all of the indies and early access games u can't get on consoles yet (Slay the Spire 2, Mewgenics, Fields of Mystria, No Rest for the Wicked, etc.) and it's been great for that so far.
Will say, No Rest for the Wicked has a bug that launches it in Steam Deck mode and the max resolution is 800p to select. I saw there's a command prompt as a temp fix that until the devs fix the bug.
I ended up building my own couch PC as Valve refuses to sell hardware in Norway, but been using Bazzite in Big Picture Mode and it's a very nice experience, so anyone getting a Steam Machine should really look forward to it!
I'm not getting one as I already have a very strong PC, but it really is a gorgeous little thing.
Thanks for the thread, I was waiting for it.
I got my Steam Machine 2 days ago and it replaced my docked Steam Deck that I used most of the time for gaming in the last years (also own base PS5, Switch 2 and Xbox Series S).
While I already played most of the Indies and older games on the Deck, I can totally see the Machine replacing my PS5, playing more modern games now as well.
I'm really impressed with the games I briefly tested on my 1440p monitor. Crimson Desert, Black Flag Resynced, Elden Ring and KCD 2 all look and perform great.
I also already installed decky loader, emudeck and some other stuff. All of this works like on the Deck and was really easy to set up.
Im not getting one. But i do have the controller reserved. No idea when ill get my turn... but excited to try it out
My Steam Machine is on its way, but since it's GLS it will only arrive next week.

Welp, tried the command and it doesn't work. Has anyone had any success in fixing this? Been looking at the game forums and Steam forums and there's only one thread on it. Some people say to use the command line or to use proton GE, neither of which fixed it for me.
I am actually tempted to get one so I can do couch gaming with my Steam library instead of sitting at my desk which is also my workspace.

I played around with Optiscaler on 007 and Baldurs Gate 3 for a bit. Still gotta compare on BG but I think the difference in performance in the city are low while FSR3 to 4 brings a big image quality upgrade.
007 I did the early training montage - native without upscaling I get 40ish, with FSR 3 more or less locked 60 and with FSR 4 it's 55 fps with the same settings.

What's the exact launch command are you using?

Same. If the pricing situation had been any different, I possibly would've ditched my Series X for this. Can't swing it now, even if I sell the Xbox.

SteamDeck=0 %command%
Checked and there's no extra spaces or anything, others reported it not working for them either.
I was very lucky and I was in the very first round of deliveries. After having it for over a week, I am incredibly happy with my Steam Machine.
It fits what I want pretty perfectly, so I might be a special use case.
1. I love the Steam Deck and it became my primary place to play all games. My Steam library grew massively because of the Steam Deck
2. I sold off my Xbox over a year ago, and had been using Steam Deck and Switch (now 2) as my primary TV playing game devices.
3. Pretty good is good enough for me when it comes to graphics, I am quite satisfied with the Steam Machine's performance. Convenience and UX are my number 1 wants.
4. I have had a 4060 laptop (that I also use for work) that is a little more powerful than the Steam Machine, but plugging and unplugging it from the TV and having to hear the fans is a bad time. I have actually, so far, stream from the Steam Machine to my more powerful laptop because streaming doesn't trigger the fans.
5. I have a desire to have good emulation setup for my TV.
6. I like tinkering. I can run modded games, I can adjust graphics settings to get the appearance/performance I prefer, etc.
As far as the price, I look at it as equivalent to PS5 without paying (minimum) $80 a year for basic services (PS+). After 3-4 years, there is not much of a difference.

Doing some reading it seems that the game does something weird and basically ignores SteamDeck=0 on the Steam Machine specifically. From a Valve dev:
I downloaded No Rest for the Wicked to test, and it is indeed doing something weird.
I've confirmed that we are not advertising to this game that we are a steamdeck. But it still restricts the resolution to 800p height. This matches what @calamityholton mentioned above, where setting SteamDeck=0 %command% in the launch args still results in the limited resolution.
This is also not wine/proton detection as it runs correctly on my desktop PC. So the game is checking something and then limits itself to 800p. But at the moment we don't know what that something would be.
I'm going to keep this issue open even though the No Rest for the Wicked bug is unrelated and run a couple more checks. But it is likely that this is going to be a game side bug that the game dev needs to fix.
So there's nothing you can do at the moment but hope the game gets patched.
Currently locked between turning an old 5600X/16GB RAM ITX machine into a Steam Machine by buying a smaller case and 9060XT, or just waiting for my waitlist spot to be called by Valve.
The 9060XT, case and low profile cooler will set me back about £550, so a sizeable chunk cheaper than the 2TB I'm on the waitlist for, but I'll also lose out on the form factor and CEC niceties.
Difficult decision.

I paid about 100 Euro extra for mine - these prices are nuts! It sells for that too?
Steam Machine price and SteamOS becoming kinda officially blessed for install on any PC made me buy a more powerful prebuilt desktop and I just installed SteamOS onto it right away.
Even though I will never buy one, I still adore the Steam Machine form factor, though. So I'll be in here to happily absorb people's ownership anecdotes.
Thanks for making an OT! I received my Steam Machine on Wednesday and love it so far. I've beat öoo, ElecHead, and just started CATO: Buttered Toast. I plan to start emulating as well, likely on the weekend.

In the Optiscaler window at the bottom, how much upscaler time in ms is it showing at 4k or other resolutions?

Not at my PC right now, but BG3 had around 4ish MS and I think it's similar for 007 too.

I appreciate you making this OT. I know a lot of people have been asking for one. Small suggestion, maybe add the Steam Machine specs to the OT? That way people who want to build their own Steam Machine have a baseline to look at (with a caveat that currently SteamOS only works with AMD CPUs and GPUs).
Maybe also add the review thread?

Yep, 1440p/60 with FSR 4 if I handled it correctly. FSR 3 had something like 1.5ms in comparison.

Scalpers in my area are not getting what they want. I can get for maybe $100 premium over total including tax. I'm thinking about it. Any downsides to buying second hand in terms of warranty? Would be unopened…
i'm in the reservation queue for 512GB but still waiting to be picked ![]()
I also ordered a 2TB drive cuz I wanted the 2TB lol... considering upgrading the RAM too to 32GB but way too pricey to do now :(

Sounds about what I was expecting. I saw a RX 6600 with similar int8 performance could run the old model at 1440p with a cost of ~5ms, and the newer model is a bit cheaper.
Next time you get a chance, would you be able to see what the cost at 4k is with FSR4?

Looking at other videos, I'm surprised at how much stuff it seems able to get 4k 30fps with FSR4 in.
I received my purchase email on June 30th..arrived on July 6th but I didn't get to play around with it until July 9th due to vacation. It's so far very snappy and plays games well...I will be using it mainly for PC exclusive indies and the random outfox/clonehero sessions. Also will work a lot better for jackbox nights at the house than my laptop.
Thread watched.
See you in 2028 when Valve will send me an invite to purchase this thing![]()

Sure, I can check that out - what's the cost where the game would get noticeably more sluggish?
Honestly, the more I read about the Steam Machine, the more I want one. It's not a powerhouse, but it performs way better than I expected. I'm cool with dropping the resolution to 1440p or 1080p as long as it looks good, and the Steam Machine handles 1080p like a champ. But the best part is how small it is; it's tiny for what it can do. I was even thinking of building a small matx PC, and that's still way bigger than this thing. If this machine was around $700 to $900, it would've been perfect. The size, Steam OS, and having my Steam library with tons of indies and older games that would run great at high settings at 1440p and 4K is just what I'm looking for.
Sure, I can check that out - what's the cost where the game would get noticeably more sluggish?
It's hard to pick a specific cost, but maybe over 5ms? I'd expect the Machine to be between 8-9 ms at 4k though, which is quite heavy. If you'd want to be targeting 60 FPS, you'd have to be getting ~120 FPS at the base resolution, which is a lot to ask for.
1440p really probably is going to be the sweet spot and still look quite good on a 4k TV.
I'm on the Reservation list - just impatiently waiting.
I have a top-spec gaming PC in my office - 5090 & 64GB RAM on a 13900K. But, that's up in my attic office at the same desk I work from on a 27" monitor meant for one.
The Steam Machine will be my family room PC downstairs where I can play more simple games with my kids. Very first thing I want to dive into is doing a replay of Kingdom Hearts - this time with my little kiddos. It'll be their first time seeing KH.
Played around with my Machine a bit yesterday. It's definitely hampered by the 8gb VRAM. The thing would be powerful enough in terms of rendering for 1440p 30fps/40fps high-settings with RT gaming in new AAA releases - but you pretty much always have to drop textures to low to get there because RT eats too much VRAM in these modern titles. 1080p just doesn't look good on a modern 4k TV so that's not a good solution either.
Also…I haven't touched anything and FSR4 is being offered to me in games as an upscaling option. So I guess that's live?!
I think the VRAM limitation is the fatal flaw unfortunately
This is most likely going to become my dedicated emulation and indies machine because it's perfect for that stuff. As well as old AAA games - great for that too. Like 360 era stuff is usually amazing on here and almost always a better experience on SteamOS than Windows.

I had the same realization with the older gen stuff. I got mine on Wednesday but wasn't able to get to it until yesterday. It dawned on me that I could play Binary Domain and Sleeping Dogs without Windows or going back to the actual hardware. I mostly wanted it for the console-like experience for indies. It kinda gives new life to older releases for me too though.
Is it fair to say that the biggest differences (besides price) between a Steam Machine and similarly specced all-AMD box running SteamOS are:
- built in Steam controller dongle
- HDMI CEC support
- Smaller Size
- Lower Noise (potentially)
- Faceplate support
- Some subjective comfort that the OS is built specifically for the device (though I can't discern a concrete difference here if you build an all-AMD box)
Anything I am missing? Any exclusive or significantly easier software features? Most reviews just focus on the performance and not what's actually unique about the machine

I'm not sure if this is unique to the Steam Machine, but I recall a review mentioning the fact that its antenna configuration avoids Bluetooth interference (e.g. connected controllers), which can affect wi-fi performance. Also, if it's anything like the Steam Deck, you can expect Valve to provide support and software updates for years to come.
Reservation list for the 512 w/o Controller.
Decided to build a SFFPC using SteamOS instead as the reserve list took too long. Currently is pretty solid and is leaps ahead of what the Machine would be for me.
Might still get one for the unique factor and set it up for family. But just depends when that ends up happening if in the next week or the next year.
