Memories rarely make sense when you look at them too closely. Memoria Wake leans into that idea, turning fractured memories into a surreal world where childhood toys, everyday objects and strange enemies roam.
Developed by Team Crescendo, this 3D isometric action adventure follows Nilo, a cat-like creature armed with an umbrella, as they fight through a dreamlike world in search of a missing friend. Each area draws from a different part of Nilo’s past, giving the sense that you’re moving deeper through memories, rather than simply progressing through conventional game levels.
Trip Down Memory Lane
The game’s first area draws heavily from Nilo’s childhood, with toys and building blocks forming part of the world, while another explores memories connected to Nilo’s schooling years.

The art direction is easily the game’s strongest feature so far. Its soft, colourful aesthetic gives the world an almost storybook quality, while creature and boss designs can become seriously strange. The games’ soundtrack complements it nicely, helping to make each memory feel distinct without losing the dreamlike atmosphere.

Pain’s Coming, Better Grab an Umbrella!
Combat revolves around Nilo’s umbrella, which doubles as their primary defensive tool. Successful attacks and parries build ‘Lucidity’ that can be converted into damage or healing. The focus of combat is dodging and reading enemy attacks, while finding the right moment to strike back, rather than simply button-mashing.
While Nilo does pick up additional equipment, including a water gun, they seem to be used primarily for puzzle solving, rather than combat.

While fun, combat still needs some refinement, enemy animations and attack cues can occasionally make parrying harder to judge than it should be. Updates to the demo have already introduced changes to weapon trails, enemy animations, and the water gun, suggesting Team Crescendo is actively addressing some of these rough edges.
Finding What is Lost
Exploration also needs some work. The environments encourage investigation, but the isometric perspective can complicate elevation and movement. Some platforming sections feel awkward, and the intended route isn’t always clear.
That matters because the world itself is one of Memoria Wake‘s biggest strengths, crafting genuine curiosity in seeing how the next memory will be represented. The game’s premise gives the developers plenty of opportunities to keep surprising the player too.

Should you check it out?
For now, Memoria Wake feels like a promising work in progress. Its distinctive visual identity and cryptic approach to storytelling already make the demo worth checking out. If the combat and exploration can be brought up to the same standard, there could be something genuinely memorable hiding inside these dreams.
The demo is currently available as part of Steam Next Fest, until the 26th of October, with Team Crescendo aiming to release the full game in early 2027.
