Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has responded after the cast of the Street Fighter movie were vocally enthusiastic about the idea of making a crossover film with Mortal Kombat, and it looks like he’s open to the possibility, too — as long as a game gets made first.
“Hell yeah,” Andrew Koji, who plays Ryu, told me when asked about the possibility. “That’d be sick.” (He even brought up the idea of a Marvel vs Capcom movie, though that particular project is extremely unlikely to ever happen.)
“I want more Street Fighter,” Noah Centineo, who plays Ken, added. “If you bring an opportunity to us to be able to come back and reup these incredible characters, I’m down, and I know we’re all down. So if that’s Mortal Kombat, if that’s me kicking Thor in his face, you know?”
It wasn’t long before Ed Boon himself became aware of these comments, which he responded to in a post on Twitter/X. “Game first... then movie,” he wrote alongside a winky face emoticon.
While Boon is probably just trolling, this isn’t the first time he’s mentioned the idea of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat colliding; in May 2026, he tweeted about wanting a Street Fighter guest character in a Mortal Kombat game, saying he was a “huge fan” of the series.

Given that Mortal Kombat is a fighting game franchise known for its wild and wacky crossovers, a Street Fighter collab certainly wouldn’t be a stretch for the folks at Netherrealm. Street Fighter has had its own share of crossover games over the years (Street Fighter x Tekken, Project X Zone, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, to name a few), but the brutality and bloodiness of Mortal Kombat seems at odds with Street Fighter’s branding… and that’s exactly why Capcom rejected a proposal from Netherrealm when they were approached for a partnership some time ago.
“It's true that a proposal for a Street Fighter character in Mortal Kombat was rejected by Capcom,” former Street Fighter producer Yoshiniori Ono said in a 2019 interview. “But it wasn't me personally! There were many people at the company that felt that it wasn't a good fit for our characters. I actually met Ed [Boon] at the Brazil game show and spoke to him personally about it. So it's true — but I didn't make the decision!”
Now that Street Fighter is under new leadership that seems keen on crossovers and guest characters of all types, it’s possible that Capcom’s tune may have changed. They were enthusiastic about Yujiro Hanma joining Tekken 8, for example, and even seemed open to the idea of collaborating with Baki again, which previously enjoyed a partnership with Street Fighter 6 in 2023 and 2024.
It’s also worth noting that, now that Paramount and Warner Bros have merged, Skydance owns the rights to the Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter films — so at least as far as red tape is concerned, there are far less obstacles standing in the way of these two worlds colliding on the big screen.
