育碧在新加坡裁员70人并计划关闭芬兰工作室,是其广泛重组的一部分,显示公司正收缩全球开发规模,新加坡团队后续职责未明。
French gaming company Ubisoft has laid off 70 staff in its Singapore office, with the cuts taking place on 14 Oct. That’s about one-fifth of the studio’s local workforce, and Ubisoft said the changes are meant to align the studio with its upcoming production needs, but added that its Singapore team remains an important part of the company’s global production operation.
It’s a sizeable cut for a studio that has worked on much of the Assassin’s Creed series and led the long, troubled development of Skull and Bones. More recently, Ubisoft Singapore led development on Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, which makes the timing of these cuts harder to stomach. Ubisoft says the studio remains an important part of its global production organisation, but it has not said what the team will work on next.
Losing about one-fifth, or 20%, of its local workforce does not mean the studio is on its way out, but it does leave questions about how much of Ubisoft’s future development will still happen here. For now, the company’s assurance that Singapore remains important is just that: an assurance, with little detail about what the studio’s role will look like in practice. Ubisoft has not said which teams or roles were affected.
The cuts are part of Ubisoft’s wider restructuring. The publisher also plans to close RedLynx, its Finland-based studio best known for the Trials series. That proposal could affect up to 52 jobs and is still subject to local negotiations.
