Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s Unofficial Native PC Port Still Runs ‘Sluggish’, but Modder NotRexed Estimates Release in 2-4 Weeks
Just one day after the news that The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening had been recompiled for a native PC port, it's time to report the same about The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
The 2023 masterpiece that launched on the Nintendo Switch and later got an enhanced Nintendo Switch 2 version has been recompiled for PC by NotRexed, the co-owner of Wasm.rip, a group of people who have already recompiled the following games:
- Among Us
- Azahar (port by sexyplankton)
- Bendy and the Ink Machine (port by crackers & slqnt)
- ClusterTruck (port by NotRexed)
- Cuphead (port by crackers)
- Granny 3 (port by crax)
- GTA 3 (port by shxyder)
- How To Fish (port by NotRexed)
- Inscryption (port by reeyuki)
- Kerbal Space Program (port by crackers)
- Lethal Company (port by crax)
- Lobotomy Corporation (port by reeyuki)
- MiSide (port by crackers)
- One Shot: World Machine Edition (port by shayder)
- PEAK (port by dasher)
- Stardew Valley (port by cirsius)
- Trombone Champ (port by gurtmuncher)

Based on the screenshots shared by NotRexed on X, the current frame rate ranges from 32 FPS to 59 FPS on a GeForce RTX 4060 Ti GPU. The modder admits that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom still runs "sluggish", but also adds that the project has only been worked on for a couple of days, so it will be fixed. When users asked about the completion date, NotRexed estimated two to four weeks, not wanting to release an incomplete port.
It goes without saying that, just like for similar recompilation projects (Super Smash Bros. Melee, God of War 3 Remastered, and Bloodborne, just to name a few), AI was likely used liberally to make this happen. Still, the results remain very impressive and could herald a new era of gaming. Even Xbox just announced a new division dedicated solely to experimentation inspired by the AI-powered game projects that have made the news over the last few weeks.
Of course, it's likely that Nintendo will file a DMCA strike against this Tears of the Kingdom port if it were ever shared publicly.
