Valor Mortis – out now on Game Pass and more

Napoleon’s armies conquered much of Europe, but Valor Mortis imagines a far more horrifying legacy than anything written in the history books.

Published by Lyrical Games, Valor Mortis hits Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC, with Xbox Play Anywhere support and a day-one launch on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.

A Soldier Reborn In A Europe Gone Wrong

William has already given his life in service to Napoleon. His return should be impossible, yet he awakens with a new and disturbing power running through his veins. The Europe he finds is a twisted version of the 19th century, with ravaged battlefields, sprawling mountains and historic cities now overrun by a plague that has transformed the world into something nightmarish.

Napoleon’s conquest has unleashed a threat far beyond conventional warfare, and William must uncover the truth behind both the outbreak and his own resurrection. Guided by Napoleon’s disembodied voice, he’ll encounter the remains of an empire caught in a struggle against supernatural corruption, with the line between historical fiction and horror becoming increasingly blurred.

First-Person Soulslike Combat With A Supernatural Edge

One More Level, the studio behind Ghostrunner, is taking its experience with first-person action into a very different setting. Valor Mortis uses challenging, stamina-based combat that rewards timing and precision, putting parries, evasive dashes and brutal finishers at the centre of each encounter.

William’s arsenal draws on the period, with weapons such as rapiers and flintlock pistols available alongside his supernatural abilities. Combining these tools will be essential when facing the plague-ridden Eternal Guard and the other abominations roaming the continent.

Death is also part of the learning process. Each failed attempt provides an opportunity to improve, encouraging players to master enemy patterns and make better use of William’s abilities. His corruption isn’t simply a consequence of the plague – it’s a weapon that can be developed, with new supernatural powers and enhanced attacks offering further ways to take on increasingly dangerous foes.

Explore The Rotting Remains Of Napoleon’s Empire

Combat is only one part of Valor Mortis. The game also features Metroidvania-style exploration, with William’s enhanced mobility allowing him to reach new areas, outmanoeuvre enemies and uncover secrets hidden throughout the environment.

The world is designed to reward players who look beyond the obvious route. Environmental discoveries may improve your chances of survival, while exploring the ravaged landscape helps piece together the mystery surrounding the plague and the forces responsible for William’s return.

The atmosphere receives just as much attention, full of theatrical lighting and grim visual design that gives its alternate-history Europe a suitably unsettling feel, backed by an original soundtrack co-composed by Arkadiusz Reikowski, known for his work on Silent Hill 2 Remake, The Medium and Layers of Fear, alongside in-house composer Oskar Bała.

A Dark New Adventure For Game Pass Players

Valor Mortis brings together a familiar Soulslike challenge with first-person combat, supernatural abilities and a historical setting that has been pushed firmly into horror territory. Its mix of demanding encounters and interconnected exploration should give players plenty to contend with as William searches for answers in a world that has long since fallen apart.

Valor Mortis is out on Xbox Series X|S (via the Xbox Store for £34.99), PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam, with day-one access included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. There is also a Deluxe Edition for £51.99 which chucks in the base game, La Grande Armée Weapon Skin Pack (Available Now), some Major Story DLC (Available 2027), a Weapon Skin Pack 1 (Available Fall 2026), a Weapon Skin Pack 2 (Available Summer 2027), and Weapon Skin Pack 3 (Available Fall 2027).

For players ready to take on a corrupted version of Napoleonic Europe, William’s second life looks set to be considerably more dangerous than his first.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
