Forget cruising along a sunny coastline. In AfterZero: The Last Drive, every journey could be a matter of life and death, with 3DClouds swapping its usual driving thrills for a bleak, frozen wasteland where your car might be the only thing keeping you alive.

Revealed during the Galaxies Showcase, this new single-player survival adventure is heading to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC in 2027. Players will need to explore abandoned locations, scavenge for supplies, upgrade their off-road vehicle and help a small group of survivors find a way out of the endless winter.

A Frozen World And One Very Important Vehicle

AfterZero: The Last Drive takes place after an event known as the Frostfall has left humanity scattered across an industrial wasteland buried beneath ice and snow. Your best chance of survival lies in reaching Sunnyland, a mysterious refuge where the temperatures are supposedly more forgiving.

Getting there won’t be easy. Players take control of an upgradeable off-road vehicle called Old Grizzly, accompanied by a small drone named T3DDY and the voices of fellow survivors coming through the radio.

The world is yours to explore, from abandoned cities and frozen lakes to mountain forests. But venturing further brings its own risks, with nightfall, storms and dwindling supplies forcing you to decide when to press on and when it’s time to head back.

Upgrade, Explore And Keep Everyone Alive

Old Grizzly is more than just transport. As you search the wasteland, you’ll gather resources to improve your vehicle, strengthen your base and craft tools that open up new possibilities.

Grappling hooks, ice tires and nitrogen guns are among the equipment available, while other tools, including an EMP, will help players deal with the challenges scattered throughout the world.

Back at the Firewall, a shelter offering protection from the elements, the remaining survivors need food, medicine and heat. You’ll work alongside Pops, Nova and Sak to keep the camp running, repair an old locomotive and prepare for your next expedition.

There’s a welcome balance here between heading out into the unknown and making sure there’s somewhere worth returning to. Every trip needs to bring back something useful, particularly when other lives depend on your efforts.

There’s More Going On Than The Weather

The frozen landscape also hides a more mysterious threat. An old AI controls machines scattered throughout the wasteland, and players will need to hack, disable and exploit their weaknesses to progress. Exactly who – or what – is behind the system remains a question, as does the truth about the world beyond the ice.

3DClouds CEO Francesco Bruschi describes the game as a departure for the studio, combining exploration, puzzle-solving, vehicle upgrades and base management with a harsher survival experience.

“AfterZero: The Last Drive’s oppressive atmosphere and somewhat unforgiving campaign is a big departure for us at 3DClouds. However AfterZero’s gameplay mix of exploration, puzzle solving, upgradeable car and base elements and frozen peril creates an experience which we feel is unlike anything else out there in the gaming world.”

That’s a change of direction for the team behind Formula Legends and Xenon Racer, moving away from conventional racing towards something more concerned with what happens when the journey itself becomes the biggest challenge.

AfterZero: The Last Drive Is Coming In 2027

AfterZero: The Last Drive will be coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC (check out the Steam page) in 2027.

There’s still plenty to learn about this icy adventure, but the mix of driving, exploration and looking after a struggling group of survivors gives 3DClouds something different to work with. Just remember to keep an eye on your supplies, check your vehicle before setting off and make sure the people back at the Firewall have enough to get by. In a world like this, running out of road could be the least of your problems.
