Grand Theft Auto 6’s first-ever TV spot debuted last night, and it continues the launch trailer’s approach of pretending that Xbox doesn’t even exist.
While it’s been clear for some time now that PlayStation has the exclusive marketing rights to GTA 6, the past few months have cemented just how close Rockstar and Sony are for the game. Right around the time pre-orders went live, both companies straight-up said that GTA 6 “plays best on PlayStation”.
All of that is fairly standard, but things got a little wilder last week with GTA 6’s launch trailer, which not only had the PlayStation symbol kick things off, but also completely left Xbox’s logo out at the end when platforms are displayed. That tactic is even being used for general audiences, who might not even realise GTA 6 is on Xbox as well.
Even GTA 6’s TV Adverts Are Only Mentioning PlayStation
I Wonder If Xbox Are Still Happy With Its Performance
As pointed out by Twitter user videotech, GTA 6’s first-ever TV spot, which is just a shorter version of the recent launch trailer, debuted last night on NBC Sports. Alongside removing the steamy shower scenes and some of the more violent moments, the most notable thing about the trailer is that it also doesn’t include any mention of Xbox.
Even in the last few seconds where there’s all the legal information, only the PlayStation logo is shown, and there doesn’t even appear to be small text confirming Xbox. It’s the same as it was in the launch trailer, which is pretty surprising to see considering this ad is the one intended for general audiences.
This will likely be the case for the version of the advert that plays in cinemas too, so it really is the messaging for everyone.
Pretty much anyone who watches the GTA 6 trailers on YouTube knows enough about the game to know why only PlayStation is appearing and that it’s still available on Xbox, but those catching it on TV might not. Honestly, I wouldn’t blame anyone for thinking that GTA 6 is exclusive to PS5, especially with the treatment it’s getting.
It’s no surprise that PS5 is being pushed for GTA 6 as much as possible, but it is a little strange to leave Xbox out entirely, especially since they were included at the end of Trailer 2. It’s not clear if it’s just part of the marketing deal now it’s out in the open and more front and centre than ever, but it’s still interesting to see how much it’s been pushed away.
