Fancy exploring a dinosaur-infested research facility with little more than a knife and your wits? Athanasia might be worth a look. The first-person survival horror game from Momentum Games and Black Lantern Collective has launched in Steam Early Access for $15.99, with a 10% launch discount until 2nd November.

Inspired by classics like System Shock and Dino Crisis, Athanasia puts players in the shoes of Carmen Flores, who finds herself stranded in an abandoned research station deep in the South American jungle. The facility is crawling with prehistoric creatures, and getting out alive means exploring its blood-soaked corridors, uncovering hidden passages, and figuring out what went horribly wrong.

The Early Access version includes the first half of the game, with several areas to explore, new weapons to discover, and plenty of dangerous creatures standing between you and the truth.

However, don’t expect to blast your way through every problem. Athanasia encourages players to get creative with the tools around them. You can smash through barriers with a crowbar, restore power to locked doors, or whip up improvised explosives when things get messy. There are also plenty of ventilation shafts for sneaking past particularly nasty dinosaurs.

Finding your way around is another challenge. Players must track down maps and mark important locations themselves, including locked doors, supplies, and enemy sightings. When it comes to combat, you’ll need to make every resource count, using traps, bait, and environmental hazards to turn the odds in your favor.

With dinosaurs on the loose and danger lurking around every corner, Athanasia looks like a promising pick for fans of old-school survival horror. Just remember: sometimes, running is the smartest move.
