Riot Games has announced that League of Legends Classic will be shut down early next year, ending support for the mode just a few months after launch. Classic will remain playable through the rest of Season 3 before being removed in January 2027.

In its update, Riot said that while many players enjoyed revisiting the older version of League, most have since returned to the modern game. As the studio explained: “Classic will be available through the rest of Season 3 and will then end its current run in January 2027. We’ll then put Classic back in the box for now, with the goal of bringing it back, likely as an event mode with adjustments and additions.”

Riot will introduce windowed queues in regions where Classic’s population has dropped sharply, leading to long matchmaking times and large MMR gaps. Classic Custom games will remain available at all times. The studio is also issuing refunds for Classic‑specific purchases that will no longer be usable, and from patch 26.21 onwards, the Classic store will only offer Champions, Runes and Rune Pages.

Despite the shutdown, Riot will continue releasing champions for Classic through patch 26.23, including Irelia, Karma, Quinn, Aatrox, Caitlyn, Mordekaiser, Yorick, Hecarim, Lucian, Volibear, Urgot and Udyr. Riot says it will share more about what it learned from the mode’s short run, including where it succeeded and where sticking too closely to the past may have held the experience back.

League Classic is the latest project to be wound down at Riot. The company recently cancelled its League‑themed fighting game, 2XKO, and placed Legends of Runeterra into maintenance mode. Riot also sold off Hypixel Studios and the long‑delayed Hytale project. Like many publishers that expanded rapidly during the pandemic, Riot has been scaling back over the last two years as the industry continues to contract following widespread layoffs between 2023 and 2026.

KitGuru says: League Classic has only been around for a short time, so it seems a bit soon to pull the plug. However, if the player base has moved back to standard League of Legends, then maybe Classic is better off as a limited-time event mode that appears once a year or so.
