《守望先锋》中国皮肤设计大赛五个奖项超半数存在问题!抄袭与AI使用仍致获奖
Over Half of the Five Awards in the “Overwatch” China Skin Design Contest Were Problematic! Plagiarism and AI Use Still Led to Wins
'Overwatch' recently held its second "If the Crisis Had Never Happened" skin design contest in China, inviting the player community to unleash their creativity and design new skins for "Overwatch" heroes. Unexpectedly, various controversies arose after the winners were announced. First, a Third Prize-winning entry was disqualified for the unauthorized use of AI. Additionally, a Second Prize-winning D.Va skin was accused of plagiarism, and other entries were questioned for resubmitting old designs. Now, there are even allegations that the winning entry accused of plagiarism was pre-selected to win.
According to the official announcement, Art Director Dion Rogers personally served as a judge for this *Overwatch* skin design contest. In addition to cash prizes of 20,000 RMB for first place, 10,000 RMB for second place, and 6,000 RMB for third place
three Popular Choice Awards, each worth 800 RMB (approximately 3,400 New Taiwan Dollars), were also established, with winners determined primarily by community voting. All winning entries have the opportunity to be incorporated into the game.
However, unexpectedly, following the announcement of the winners, the organizers recently issued an official statement confirming that the third-place entry, "Animal Maid Café," violated the contest rules prohibiting the use of AI, and the award was therefore revoked. Another third-place entry, "Anna Yinli," was found to have been publicly presented by the author at a doujin café event in May of this year, which similarly violated the rule against "resubmitting previously published work." Although the author claimed to have thoroughly revised the design, the official page now lists the third-place winners as Juno's "Summer Beach" and "Moira: Mechanical Ascension."
But that's not all. Next, a creator from Colombia posted a side-by-side comparison on X, alleging that the second-place winning entry plagiarized a work he had published back in 2015. Even more shocking is that, after many concerned Chinese netizens helped report the issue, it was revealed that this entry was actually a pre-selected winner by NetEase.
Consequently, although the second-place winners have now been officially updated on the contest page to Wuzi's "Cute Fox Baker" and Wuyang's "Sincere Passion," the fact that three out of just five winners—from first to third place—violated the contest rules yet still received their awards has severely damaged the reputation of the *Overwatch* "If the Crisis Had Never Happened" Skin Design Contest, leading many players to question the credibility of the contest's judging process.
