[GameFile] Ghost of Yotei's budget is very similar to Ghost of Tsushima's budget (~60M)

In an interview with Game File (paywalled), Brian Fleming talked about how Ghost of Yotei had a very similar development timeline to that of its predecessor. Ghost of Tsushima cost around $60 million, so the sequel also had a similar budget.

'When we look at the financials and the costs, the man years, the amount of months that the team—times the size of the team—worked on it, [it's] very, very similar, actually' - Brian Fleming, the co-founder of Sucker Punch

That's very surprising and pretty low. I guess they will be profitable on launch.

dakun

also fired a 10-year dev at the studio for not giving a shit about a fascist so fuck Fleming

RiZ IV

Either that team is tiny or they're very underpaid, cause 60million for a multi-year development timeline is very cheap.

F4r0_Atak

That is indeed surprising, considering how tech companies tend to cost in Seattle. Well good for them!

gdt

That is... surprising. Where is Sucker Punch located?

Edit: Seattle?? Hmm. Are there tax incentives involved? That budget is.....huh.

does the 60m budget for the first game have an official source?
All I can find is something coming from a linkedin profile, I don't know how much we could trust that (see what happened with Forza Horizon 5 numbers on ps5)

Yup, fuck sucker punch

That wouldn't be Sucker Punch though. All hirings (and consequently firings) are handled by SIE.

"The facts are accurate," Fleming told me.

"Drew's no longer an employee here. I think we're aligned as a studio that celebrating or making light of someone's murder is a deal-breaker for us, and we condemn that, kind of in no uncertain terms. That's sort of our studio, and that's kind of where we are."

EDIT: changed it from a Kotaku link to a direct quote from this article

Hail to Starscream

Not really surprised after seeing the trailers. It looks like a DLC for Tsushima. The tech hasn't improved much at all.

SillySailorMoon

sure Brian, but you see, if we multiply this number about seven times, we could have a live service megahit called Concord in our hands. I personally see that as a more viable option. Im also sure the guy responsible for this decision is very fit for his position at the top and I hope he continues to be in helm at PlayStation WW studios (rip) for a long time!

serious: the fucking wild thing is, both these games are developed in Seattle and they both entered full production phase nearly at the same time. Much to think about.

That's quite a statement.

"The facts are accurate," Fleming told Stephen Totilo's Game File when asked about the situation. "Drew's no longer an employee here. I think we're aligned as a studio that celebrating or making light of someone's murder is a deal-breaker for us, and we condemn that, kind of in no uncertain terms. That's sort of our studio, and that's kind of where we are."

They are not an independent studio though. At the end of the day, they represent SIE in all manners. So they can say whatever for PR purposes but that call most likely came from higher-ups at SIE.

Yeeboh

It does look very close to Tsushima so that explains a lot.

Remeran

That's quite a statement.

While I think saying DLC is hyperbole, it does look very similar to the first one.

That's not a bad thing though, fallout 2 looks very similar to fallout 1 and it improved on almost every aspect of the first. I don't know why people now need the tech to "evolve" so much between sequels. I just want the first game, but iterated and made better.

"But you see the graphics don't look better."

I couldn't care less, it still looks great while being cheaper to develop guaranteeing higher return on investment and more aaa games in the future.

Fiery Phoenix

I get the feeling that the reception is going to be a mixed bag.

Yautja_Warrior

Nice, should hopefully be pretty successful then. More big AAA games need to follow this, instead of having crazy $200+ million budgets.

Based on what?

F4r0_Atak

No, what explains it is that the world size for Yotei is about the same as Tsushima's. Nothing else. The tech for lighting, skin shaders, textures, foliage density have all improved significantly. Unless you are comparing it to the PS5 version of Ghost of Tsushima, which would be unfair.

Universal Acclaim

Impressive, very nice. Not sure how Tsushima and Yotei were cheaper than Rift Apart, which was mainly developed in around 2 years I think.

Kabuki Waq

The tech was already there so probably saved a bunch of cost.

Still looks better than Tsushima on PS5 in my opinion

hog

Very revealing imo that this kind of direct iterative follow up is no longer cheaper or quicker to make than the whole original IP was just a few years ago. Things have changed fast.

That wouldn't be Sucker Punch though. All hirings (and consequently firings) are handled by SIE.

You are sure this is true? That's really uncommon. Usually, the studio head decides who is hired/fired in coordination with HR.

modiz

It probably suggests the game was made with very little outsourcing. 5 years with a 100 developer studio would end up at roughly that

Same development time as the first game, looks similar to it, so it just make sense.

Makes Insomniac look bad when they had to triple their budget for Spider-Man 2. Sucker Punch also is doing it with an entirely new map.

he's literally on record in support of the firing. Speaking on it voluntarily. He's not washing his hands clean of this.

That makes no sense. A large studio with its own HR department handles its own staff.

Hresvelg_

~4 year dev cycle with a budget that's not overly bloated sounds pretty good to me.

Insomniac credited nearly three times as many people in the second installment (3,400). GOT had "only" 1,600, and since GOY has almost the same cast, it makes sense that the budget would be the same. Then Sony may have had to pay more for the rights to Marvel following the success of the first installment.

I believe Sucker Punch said recently in an interview that they have around 200 employees.

Firmus_Anguis

This is not... Reassuring. 😅

Especially considering how well GoT sold! You'd think they'd reinvest that money somehow.

They've barely shown anything outside of combat (which obviously looks fantastic) and heck, even GoT tried to show us some varation and side activities.

I platinumed GoT and I barely remember it.

GoY looks more compelling, for sure, but yeah... I'll await the reviews for this one.

Deleted member 20731

Even without it's own HR department. Then it goes through Corp HR but it's still the studio head that makes the decision.

Really weird management it that's true.

Arex

That's like saying all the Yakuza games are DLCs

Sucker Punch doesn't have to pay a huge licensing fee to Disney.

Someone earlier asked how would a thread about this news would go, and I said someone is guarateed to say "it looks the same so makes sense". Era is predictable af.

Galkinator

I mean the tech, gameplay mechanics, assets etc are probably reused from GoT so that could explain why the budget isn't nassive.

Anyway, good for them - probably means the game would be successful upon launch or within the first couple weeks

Kinthey

That seems surprising considering the first one was a big hit so you'd expect the budget to increase. Then again, not like increased budget automatically makes for a better game (looking at you spiderman 2)

BabyDontHurtMe

They probably cut cost firing devs who mocked Kirk death

That employees salary was that much? Damn what a gig

RockyROB

I mean it looks obvious as to why the budget would be around the same.

This was never a day 1 for me after Ghost 1 and was always a potential deep sale purchase but tbh after finding out in this thread about the developer getting fired for making light of a nazi being killed, I'm never buying or playing this. The studio and it's culture can go fuck itself.

modiz

I believe Sucker Punch said recently in an interview that they have around 200 employees.

That's probably only for the last stretch of the development. For the vast majority of the game's development they were a 100 developer studio

Grakchawwaa

Using assets and technology wisely will just be good business for the studio. Really looking forward to picking it up once I finish Silksong.

gundamkyoukai

Makes Insomniac look bad when they had to triple their budget for Spider-Man 2. Sucker Punch also is doing it with an entirely new map.

IG is in a more expensive location with twice the amount the devs and bet the outsource amount will be much much larger.
There also add a huge amount add and set piece is case a shit ton of money and time.
You simple can't compare things that easy then there also the disney fee.

R3ndezvous

Makes Insomniac look bad when they had to triple their budget for Spider-Man 2. Sucker Punch also is doing it with an entirely new map.

Was that budget fully for game development of the game?

Armoredgoomba

That means that each of the 200 employees cost was an average ~6.2K (before taxes) per month over 4 years. That doesn't really make sense unless part of dev was spent with a smaller staff and they have a 2nd project (which I don't think they do)
