Despite its hardware, the Nintendo Switch 2 is consistently hitting above its weight in multiplatform games, and among the most impressive ports released so far is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Although Square Enix definitely achieved incredible quality, it seems like Final Fantasy VII Revelation will try to push things further in terms of visual quality, as Naoki Hamaguchi feels confident they will further bridge the gap with the other systems in the third and final entry in the series.

The attention to graphics, however, won't mean gameplay will be neglected. Combat depth, in particular, also seems to have been taken to the next level, as evidenced by some very recent footage shared online.

Bringing the Nintendo Switch 2 Graphics Quality to The Next Level

"Obviously, we were very happy, very satisfied with the level of quality we managed to get on the Switch 2 version of Rebirth. For Revelation, we understand we’re doing Switch 2 and all of the platforms at the same time. We didn’t want to limit ourselves based on that," said Hamaguchi-san to Nintendo Everything. "The idea is to take the graphics quality and the presentation even higher than it was on Rebirth to the top level it can be. We’re confident that with the experience we got from working on the Switch 2 port of Rebirth, we’ll be able to bridge that gap and take that extra level on the comparative lower spec platforms as well."

As for how Final Fantasy VII Revelation on Nintendo Switch 2 will take graphics quality and presentation above Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's, Hamaguchi-san didn't go into specifics, but he did say that it will be an improved optimization that will help the team achieve this goal.

"What we managed to do on Rebirth and then the differences in the game, Rebirth and Revelation, we’re going to take the optimization for that based on what we did for Rebirth, and that will all be done to probably a higher level of optimization because of the knowledge we have," he said. "It’s not that everything is much higher on Switch 2, just because we pushed it that far. But with optimization, it should all come out as a really good result in the end."

The FITS System Will Be More Impactful Than Expected

While Naoki Hamaguchi and his team are focusing on the graphics quality and presentation of Final Fantasy VII Revelation across all platforms, it's becoming clear that they aren't neglecting gameplay in any capacity. The introduction of the FITS system is going to add even more role-playing game systems to the experience, but it will also augment the significant action component of the combat system in a surprisingly clever way.

When the game was announced back in June during Summer Game Fest, it was revealed that the FITS would somehow change the character's basic movesets. However, playing through the gamescom 2026 demo, I couldn't notice any significant change. Barret with the Knight FITS, for example, attacked like he usually did in Rebirth, as did Yuffie with the Warrior FITS. However, it seems that specific fits outside the Summoner will indeed bring significant changes to characters' basic attack strings, deepening combat even further than it already is.

In a new video shared yesterday, YouTuber BltzZ went over footage recorded at NYCC of the playable demo featuring the game's first chapter, the same one seen at this year's Tokyo Game Show. While most of the footage shows elements we already saw in action, the YouTuber highlighted how Tifa, in the Black Mage FITS, shoots orbs of magic a la Aerith for the last attack of her basic combat string.

In addition, the YouTuber also highlighted how syncing with Shiva allows Cloud with the Summoner FITS to use a special ice-based attack at the end of his basic combo string, which suggests how much summons can alter a character's basic moveset, more than what we have already seen.

With every new detail, Final Fantasy VII Revelation is shaping up more and more to be an incredible JRPG. Hopefully, Square Enix will take advantage of the final gaming event of the year, The Game Awards, to show more of a game that is set to become one of the best of 2027, if not of the entire generation.
