Arcturus Vision's Steam Frame app now flips to night vision when your room goes dark

The Arcturus Vision Camera app for Steam Frame can now hand the view back to the headset's own passthrough by itself when a room goes dark, and it will put that switch on whichever controller buttons you prefer. Arcturus Vision added both in an update posted on October 10, then shipped a second release on October 12.

Arcturus describes the first as "Auto night vision: enables built-in passthrough when IR LEDs are on (in the dark)". The app watches for the headset's infrared LEDs coming on and switches over, and the same release adds status overlays, described as "An overlay appears to tell you when a switch occurs".

The binding is the other half. Arcturus describes it as "Switch passthrough using any controller button long-press combo you want", which replaces a fixed shortcut with one the owner chooses.

The software is free on Steam, where it has been listed since September 14, and the camera it drives is the paid part. It is the third-party colour passthrough camera for Steam Frame we covered on September 22, and it plugs into the port whose hardware documentation Valve published for accessory makers.

Arcturus has shipped five releases since October 2

The October 2 update added 24, 33 and 50 fps capture and fixed upside-down video. A "Player UI Overhaul" with health checks followed on October 7, and a second release later the same day fixed dropped recordings at the High and Ultra encoder quality settings.

The October 10 release also widened the video library from a two-by-two grid to three-by-two, and fixed a bug where scrubbing a video could show a decoder error.

Then came the October 12 release, which fixes per-frame exposure and gain metadata arriving empty, stops health checks popping up automatically on launch, and "detects another condition where SteamVR could make passthrough extremely dark & offers to fix it". Arcturus gives no cause and names no SteamVR build, so what ships is a detection and an offer to fix rather than an explanation.

The developer is preparing a chaperone bug report for Valve

Arcturus adds a caution of its own: "Sometimes, switching cameras can temporarily remove your chaperone. The issue can also occur with heavy system load without camera switching. We are working to provide Valve with a bug report on this issue."

That is the developer's own account of the behaviour, and the report is one Arcturus says it is preparing rather than one it has filed. Valve has not acknowledged the problem.

Chaperone trouble is not new on the headset. Steam Frame owners reported in early October that the boundary stopped appearing while streaming from a PC, and Valve asked for steps to reproduce it. Arcturus does not tie its note to that case.

What is on Steam now is a camera app that hands the view back to the headset's own passthrough when the light goes, puts that switch on a button of the owner's choosing, and publishes its unresolved problems alongside its fixes.
