There's a reason Galactic Racer is the highest-rated Star Wars game in two decades, but it's bizarre that it doesn't have split-screen co-op out of the starting grid. Especially when it already has online multiplayer. Thankfully, as per usual, modders are on the case.

zhelan just released a new mod that adds couch co-op support for up to four players. You can select an individual class and vehicle before choosing the planet and mode where you'll compete for the top spot. The mod also ensures that danger effects and messages are individual to each player, and that if you wreck your vehicle, you won't be stuck watching a black screen. Instead, as you'd expect from a racer, you can spectate others.

How To Install Zhelan's Couch Co-Op Mod

Installing 'couch split screen for Galactic Racer' is simple.

• Download the latest release
• Copy 'ue4ss-build\dwmapi.dll' and 'ue4ss-build\ue4ss\' to '\Griffin\Binaries\Win64\'
• Place 'SWGRCouch\' into 'ue4ss\Mods\'
• Move 'ue4ss_signatures\*.lua' to 'ue4ss\UE4SS_Signatures\'
• Open 'ue4ss\Mods\mods.txt' and add the line 'SWGRCouch : 1' to the top

You'll know the mod has been installed successfully if the split-screen option appears on the main menu.

Unfortunately, this is only available for PC as, if you're playing on console, there's no mod support. That means split-screen co-op being added is entirely dependent on Fuse Games. To offer a sliver of hope, however, the team is currently looking to the community "and what matters most to you." So, it's entirely possible that official support for couch co-op will be added in the future if demand is high enough.

It's still early days for the modding scene, with the basics being ironed out like cheat menus, splash-screen skips, and reshades, but zhelan's work isn't the only ambitious mod to release this week: N0M4Dcode just launched a first-person cockpit view.

"Take the racing experience to the next level with an immersive first-person cockpit camera that puts you right into the action," the mod promises. "Feel the speed, navigate tight corners, and experience the thrill of racing from a completely different viewpoint."

Combined with a VR injection, Galactic Racer might take the crown for the most nauseating Star Wars game of all-time, just narrowly edging ahead of Squadrons.
