Electronic Arts is shutting down BioWare, the longtime studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, as part of a new round of layoffs affecting approximately 400 employees.
The closure ends the studio’s more than 30-year history and comes as EA cancels the next Mass Effect game, which was in early development.
According to Bloomberg, the cuts will impact roughly 3% of EA’s workforce, including approximately 50 employees at BioWare. The announcement comes just two months after EA went private following a $55 billion leveraged buyout led by Saudi Arabia’s investment fund.
EA closes BioWare as part of major restructuring
In an October 21 letter to employees reviewed by Bloomberg, EA Chief Operating Officer David Tinson and Chief Studios Officer Cam Weber outlined the company’s plans to reduce its workforce and cancel several projects.
“Over the past several months, we’ve taken a hard look at our business,” the executives wrote.
The restructuring includes the closure of BioWare and the cancellation of its next Mass Effect game, which was still in the early stages of development.
BioWare was founded in 1995 and acquired by EA in 2007. The studio became known for its roleplaying games, including the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises, which helped establish its reputation throughout the 2000s and early 2010s.
BioWareHowever, BioWare struggled in more recent years following the releases of Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem, both of which received criticism from players and reviewers.
Its final game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, was released in 2024 but failed to meet EA’s sales expectations. The game’s performance contributed to significant staffing reductions at BioWare in 2025.
The studio’s closure also follows EA’s $55 billion buyout, which was completed in August 2026 and added approximately $18 billion in debt to the company’s books.
Earlier this year, EA told investors it had identified opportunities to save as much as $700 million, partly through reductions in research and development spending.
EA cancels more projects but continues investing in major franchises
BioWare isn’t the only studio affected by EA’s latest restructuring, with the publisher also making changes to several other projects.
The company has canceled Project Lotus, an upcoming game in The Sims franchise, and will instead prioritize another project known internally as Project Evergreen.
EA / DexertoEA also confirmed that development of skate will continue, although the team working on the skateboarding game will be downsized.
Meanwhile, the publisher plans to continue investing in its established franchises, including EA Sports titles, Apex Legends and Battlefield.
Other projects moving forward include the next Star Wars Jedi game and an upcoming Iron Man title from Marvel.
EA also revealed that Respawn Entertainment and DICE will collaborate on a new project, which Bloomberg reports is likely to be another installment in the Star Wars Battlefront franchise.
“Across our portfolio, we’re making deliberate choices to align talent and investments where we see the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth,” the executives wrote.
EA has not announced the fate of the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises beyond the cancellation of BioWare’s next Mass Effect game.
