The next Magic: The Gathering crossover is heading to the final frontier. Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek brings new mechanics inspired by the Federation, the Borg, and the ships that carry their crews across the galaxy, alongside a pair of mechanics designed specifically for Commander. It’ll be hard to pack 60 years of Star Trek into a single set, but Wizards of the Coast is highlighting the most iconic themes and characters of the series.

The new “beam me up” ability lets players cast certain instant and sorcery cards from their graveyard by returning a creature they control to their hand and paying the listed cost. Returning that creature is part of the cost, so opponents cannot wait for the spell to be announced and then remove the creature to stop the play. The spell is exiled afterward, whether it resolves, is countered, or fails because its targets are no longer legal.

The cost of beaming a spell back does more than recover a card. Returning a creature can trigger its “enters” abilities again, remove an Aura attached to it, or get it out of danger. It can also create tactical choices about which creature to return and when. Sorceries still follow the usual timing rules, so they can only be cast during your main phase when the stack is empty.

Another new rules term, “face a dilemma,” applies when a player chooses one or more modes for a modal spell or ability. The choice counts even if the spell is later countered or does not resolve. Choosing multiple modes, including the same mode more than once when allowed, still counts as facing a single dilemma. The mechanic rewards making the choice, not necessarily getting the chosen effect.

Federation abilities reward players for assembling a diverse crew. They count the number of creature types among the non-Borg creatures you control, and different cards use that number in different ways. Borg creatures do not contribute their creature types to that count, though the same types still count if they appear on non-Borg creatures.

“Strange New Worlds” rewards exploration by counting the differently named lands you control. Each land name counts once, so several Forests contribute only one name, while an Island or a named nonbasic land adds another. Cards with the ability use that total for different effects.

The Borg get a new keyword action of their own: “assimilate.” When a card instructs you to assimilate a creature that is not on the battlefield, it enters under your control with a +1/+1 counter and becomes a Borg artifact creature, losing its other creature types. If the creature is already on the battlefield, you first gain control of it, then add the counter and make it a Borg artifact creature. Other card types and subtypes remain.

Spacecraft and the station ability return in this set. Spacecraft begin as artifacts, and many can become artifact creatures after collecting enough charge counters. To station a ship, tap another untapped creature you control during your main phase. When the ability resolves, the spacecraft receives charge counters equal to that creature’s power. Reaching the threshold shown on the card can unlock a new set of abilities and, for some ships, turn the vessel into a creature. Not every spacecraft becomes a creature, so check the card’s text.

Two mechanics are exclusive to Commander. “Battlefront” abilities care about the number of different opponents you attacked during the turn. An opponent counts only once, even if you attack them in multiple combat phases, and creatures that enter the battlefield attacking do not count toward the total. “Seek Out” abilities trigger when you draw your second card each turn, including during an opponent’s turn. The ability can still trigger if its source entered the battlefield after you drew your first card that turn.

Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek releases November 13, 2026, with prerelease events beginning November 6. Pre-orders are available now through local game stores, TCGplayer, Amazon, and other retailers.
