Install the CIA straight from your 3DS: scan this with FBI (Remote Install > Scan QR Code).
Features
- Stereoscopic 3D with depth-driven auto convergence and a comfort target
- Widescreen 400x240 on the top screen
- 60 fps on a New 3DS (interpolated frames between the game's own: one at 30 fps, two in 20 fps cutscenes)
- Analog camera on the C-Stick, invert options, note and jinjo saving
- Built-in community mods: Ability Anywhere, Banjo Bee, Cheats, Exit To Lair, Quiet Talon Trot, Sir Slush Configuration, Skip It, Toggle Trot, Transform Anywhere
- Three ROM-hack game modes: BK The Jiggies of Time, BK Nostalgia 64 and Banjo Dreamie
- Runs on Old 3DS / 2DS too (slower, see Performance)
Installing
- CIA (BanjoRecompiled3D-3ds-<commit>.cia): install with FBI or another CIA installer, or scan the QR code above. It shows on the HOME Menu as "Banjo: Recompiled". Use the CIA on an Old 3DS / 2DS.
- .3dsx (BanjoRecompiled3D-3ds-<commit>.zip): extract to the root of the SD card and start 3ds/BanjoRecomp/BanjoRecomp.3dsx from the Homebrew Launcher.
You need your own ROM: the US 1.0 version of Banjo-Kazooie, in .z64 format, at sdmc:/3ds/BanjoRecomp/BK.z64. The game checks the ROM's hash at start and deletes a file that doesn't match, so copy it rather than move it. Saves and settings.ini are kept in the same folder.
For sound, dump your console's DSP firmware once with Luma3DS: open the Rosalina menu (L + D-pad down + SELECT), then Miscellaneous options > Dump DSP firmware. It goes to sdmc:/3ds/dspfirm.cdc. Without it the game runs silent.
Game modes
Three ROM hacks can be played as game modes. Their code is built in; each needs its own ROM, which you make once on a PC:
- BK The Jiggies of Time 1.0.1
- BK Nostalgia 64 1.0.1
- Banjo Dreamie 1.3.2
- Extract the .3dsx zip into a folder on your PC, or straight onto the SD card's root. Do this with the CIA too: the zip holds the script.
- Put your ROM there as 3ds/BanjoRecomp/BK.z64.
- Download the game modes you want from Thunderstore, take the .nrm file out of each package (a zip), and put it next to make_game_mod_rom.py at the folder's root.
- Run make_game_mod_rom.py: double-click it on Windows, or run python3 make_game_mod_rom.py in that folder. It needs Python 3 (python.org) and nothing else. It writes each mode's ROM (64 MB) into 3ds/BanjoRecomp/mods/.
- Copy the 3ds folder onto the SD card's root, unless you extracted onto the card. The .nrm files and the script aren't needed on the card.
Use the versions above: a ROM made from another version is refused. With a mode's ROM in place, a menu at start offers the game and each game mode. Each mode keeps its own saves.
Controls
- A / B: A / B
- L: Z
- R: R
- START: START
- X or D-pad up: C-Up
- Y or D-pad down: C-Down
- ZL or D-pad left: C-Left
- ZR or D-pad right: C-Right
- Circle Pad: analog stick
- C-Stick: C buttons (C-Up, the first-person view, only if "C-Stick up" is on), or the analog camera (Controls settings)
SELECT opens the settings on the bottom screen: 3D, controls, camera, the game options and the built-in mods.
Mods that need extra buttons get their own on the touch screen while they're on (see Built-in mods).
Hold SELECT for a second to save a screenshot (both eyes and the touch screen) to sdmc:/3ds/BanjoRecomp/screenshots/.
Stereo 3D settings
The 3D slider turns 3D on and sets its strength. The settings' 3D page tunes it:
- 3D depth: separation at the top of the slider (default 50)
- Convergence: where the screen's plane sits in the scene (default 10.0); nearer things pop out, farther things go in
- HUD depth: where the HUD, menus and text sit (50 = on the screen)
- Auto convergence (on): brings the screen's plane nearer when something comes close to the camera (a wall, Banjo in a close-up, a cutscene's speaker), so it doesn't pop out too far
- Comfort target: how far out of the screen auto convergence lets things come (0 by default; higher for more pop-out, lower keeps everything behind the screen)
- Ghost reduction (off by default): eases ghosting on screens that show it
Performance
- New 3DS / New 2DS XL: holds 60 fps most of the time; the heaviest scenes drop back toward the game's own rate, and the jiggy transition and picture puzzles go without in-between frames. Set Frame rate to Game on the Game page for the original frame rate.
- Old 3DS / 2DS: 15-25 fps. The ROM is streamed from the SD card (an Old 3DS can't hold it in memory beside the game), so loads take a little longer; play itself isn't slowed. Install the CIA: it has more memory for that than the Homebrew Launcher.
The Game page's Particles setting (Full, Half, Quarter) thins sparkles, dust and smoke; an Old 3DS starts at Quarter.
Built-in mods (all CC0, switched on the settings' Mods page, with their options)
- Ability Anywhere (ProxySaw): flight and the Shock Jump without their pads. Tap the touch screen's Fly / Shock jump to take off, hold it to Shock Jump
- Banjo Bee (TSR Stormed): fly as Banjo Bee; Bee flight turns it on or off
- Cheats (ProxySaw): moon jump (hold Moon jump), extra speed (hold R), infinite health, lives, ammo and air
- Exit To Lair (ProxySaw): the game's unused "Exit to Lair" pause option
- Quiet Talon Trot (PunishedBigs): mutes Kazooie's running noise
- Sir Slush Configuration (Thermopolis): tunes the Freezeezy Peak snowmen's snowballs
- Skip It (ProxySaw): skips cutscenes, text and Bottles' lessons, speeds up Mumbo, boots straight to the file select
- Toggle Trot (ProxySaw): Talon Trot stays on without holding Z
- Transform Anywhere (ProxySaw): Mumbo's transformations anywhere, from touch-screen buttons (Washing machine, Croc / Walrus, Bee, Termite / Pumpkin)
The touch-screen buttons need no other button held with them, so one finger plays them all, on an Old 3DS too. The Controls page's "Mod buttons" setting can put the mods' N64 buttons on the D-pad and ZL instead (New 3DS).

AI use
The 3DS port, including its code, documentation and the rt64-3ds renderer, was written with the help of AI tools (Claude), under my direction and with my testing on real consoles.
