Epic Reportedly Tells Developers to Use AI for Disney Shooter, Avoid Handwritten Code
Epic Games has reportedly instructed developers working on its upcoming Disney shooter to use artificial intelligence rather than write code by hand, drawing confusion and concern among staff.
According to GameY, citing Bloomberg, the project features Marvel and Star Wars characters and is being developed under an “AI-first” production model centered on Anthropic’s Claude. Programmers were reportedly told to rely on the AI tool, while artists were also directed to use generative AI. Developers would review and refine the resulting work.

The shooter was originally scheduled for March 2027 but has been postponed amid development setbacks and staffing shortages, the report said. No revised release date was provided.
The project was intended to launch a broader partnership between Epic and Disney. Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic in 2024, acquiring an equity stake in the Fortnite developer.
The reported shift comes after Epic cut approximately 1,000 jobs earlier in 2026 amid weaker Fortnite performance. Some employees were reportedly shocked by the AI-first directive, raising questions about how the approach would work on a production of this scale.
Epic communications director Jake Jones said the company supports developer-led, AI-based development. CEO Tim Sweeney also said on social media that Epic was reassigning developers and changing its culture to maximize AI-accelerated development.

The strategy could become a prominent test of generative AI’s role in major game production. Its outcome will depend on whether Epic can turn AI-generated code and artwork into a cohesive game while managing the review and revision work required of its developers.
Epic has already encountered problems with generative AI in Fortnite. Last year, an AI-powered Darth Vader character produced profanity, prompting the company to issue an emergency patch within an hour, according to the article.
The Disney shooter now places Epic’s ambitions for AI-assisted development under scrutiny, with its release delayed and the practical results of the production model still to be seen.
