BeamNG.drive makes its debut on PS5 today, 19th October 2026, and it's unlike anything else available on the console.

Squeezing this vehicular physics simulation onto the six-year-old machine is a feat that fans of driving games shouldn't ignore. This is a truly unique offering that packs in a surprising amount of stuff to do — so much so, it's hard to know where to begin.

I've been messing around with BeamNG on a standard PS5 for a week or two, and there are things it does incredibly well and areas in which it struggles, but its freeform design allows for the sort of fun you can't really get in other racing games.

I think the first thing to do is explain what exactly this game is and why it's a big deal for PS5 players.

What Is BeamNG.drive on PS5?

BeamNG.drive is a simulation sandbox game that aims to be the ultimate in vehicular soft-body physics. What that means in practice is that cars take damage and crash in an extremely realistic manner.

The entire game is built around this simulation of materials and vehicles, providing many, many ways to interact with its physics and enjoy the experience in whatever manner you see fit.

BeamNG has been publicly in development since 2015, when it first launched into Early Access on Steam. In fact, the game is still in Early Access, even on PS5, and it'll be continuously added to and improved over the coming months.

The PS5 version is up-to-date with the PC release, and it includes all the maps, challenges, and modes provided by default.

Because the game is still in development, it may change quite dramatically over time, but as things stand now there are many ways to enjoy BeamNG.

What Do You Do in BeamNG.drive on PS5?

The beauty of BeamNG is that it's a sandbox; there are no right or wrong ways to play, and it contains myriad different activities that you can mess around with to your heart's content.

When you first fire up the game on PS5, it'll ask if you want to play through a tutorial, and I'd highly recommend first-time players go through it. It'll teach you some of the basics — driving controls, but also how to do things like quickly repair your vehicle, spawn new ones, access various menus, and so on.

Once you're better acquainted with how BeamNG operates, it really is up to you how to engage with the game.

Outside the tutorial, there are lots of things to explore, accessible from the main menu:

Career: Perhaps the most structured way to play, Career mode places you in the shoes of a vehicle tester, setting you up with a starter vehicle and slowly unlocking access to more as you complete challenges across various disciplines.

Freeroam: Choose a map, and explore it at your leisure. In Freeroam, you can choose whatever vehicle you like, and can control all sorts of other factors. You can spawn in more vehicles, control traffic levels, manipulate time and gravity, and more. Each map contains various optional challenges to tackle, too.

Rally: A dedicated Rally mode contains a number of rally stages for you to tackle, complete with co-driver calls and rally-appropriate cars.

In addition to these options, there's something called the Gameplay Selector, which is basically a hub containing all kinds of challenges, allowing you to quickly hop into a scenario.

You can race against AI opponents, make deliveries in large trucks, partake in police chases, drag race, attempt long jumps, and much more.

Another option on the main menu is Quick-Start Experiences, which simplifies things by offering you a more streamlined selection of activities to try.

Is BeamNG.drive Any Good on PS5?

The short answer is yes — BeamNG.drive is definitely worth playing on PS5, especially if you're the type of player who likes to tinker and mess around with systems.

The sheer variety and wealth of things to do from the get go is impressive, and it all runs on an extremely impressive physics engine that results in some hilarious and potentially wince-inducing collisions.

BeamNG gives you a lot of flexibility in how you play, and that's its greatest strength. You can really test the limits of the simulation by spawning in vehicles or obstacles and seeing how it all interacts.

How does a bus handle being driven off the side of a cliff, for example? How many cannon balls can a cement mixer truck withstand? How flat can you make a car by reversing gravity and then cranking it up like crazy?

You can fool around in this manner as much as you like, or, if you want a bit more direction, there are many challenges to engage in, as mentioned.

It's really a unique offering, especially on consoles, and there's plenty of daft fun to be had. The brand new split-screen multiplayer means you can engage in the chaos with a friend, and it works very well.

I think where BeamNG starts to come undone a bit is in its highly complex menus and controls.

This is where its PC roots really show. The developer has clearly done its best to adapt BeamNG for use with a controller, but it's painfully obvious it's best played with a keyboard and mouse.

Fortunately, the PS5 version supports them, but most will stick with a DualSense, and the game feels a bit limited by that method of input.

It's messy. There are lots of nested menus and shortcut controls to remember, and it makes the finer controls of the simulation a bit of a headache to use.

You can play the vast majority of BeamNG's content just fine with a pad, but those looking to get into the nitty gritty and really play around with all the tools and sliders at your disposal, it's not ideal.

Something else worth mentioning is that the PS5 version doesn't support mods at launch.

On PC, fans have created all sorts of extra vehicles, props, and maps that are sadly inaccessible on PS5 — though this is something the dev team is looking into for the future. Other PS5 titles support mods, so it's not out of the question going forward.

The game can also struggle with its load times, and the frame rate can dip depending on what's happening onscreen. If you've decided to spawn dozens of cars and hurtle into them at top speed, you should expect a bit of slow-down.

By and large, though, I was pretty impressed with how the game holds up; it manages to maintain a steady 60 frames-per-second more often than not. Again, it depends on what you're doing, but performance is mainly pretty good.

It's difficult to really draw a full conclusion on BeamNG.drive at this stage.

I think, for its debut on PS5, it's a great starting point. The simulation is seriously impressive, it works surprisingly well on the console's ageing hardware, and there are countless ways to enjoy it, whether that's ridiculous science experiments or shaving off milliseconds on rally stages.

Your mileage with the game will vary; it really depends on your appetite for sandbox experiences like this. There are a lot of more structured challenges, but really, you need to be able to make your own fun to get the most of out BeamNG.

It's going to be fascinating to see the game evolve and improve over time. It's a brilliant project, and I'm excited to see where it goes following its PS5 launch.
