Nintendo has spoken about the pre-launch interest in Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2 and has offered up some hope for a restock of products such as the series’ 40th Anniversary Edition system.
The remake has been massively popular since its announcement during the summer, and even more so following the proper reveal last month. Right now, the gameplay trailer is sitting at over ten million views on Nintendo of America’s YouTube channel. Meanwhile, the game has already appeared on various bestseller charts based on pre-orders alone.
The hype extends to The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 console. The system pretty much sold out right away in many regions and hasn’t received a large-scale restock.
Bill van Zyll, VP and general manager for Nintendo in Latin America, recently told Coelho that Zelda: Ocarina of Time is “a global phenomenon” and the company “underestimated how well it would be received.” For those wondering about the U.S. specifically, he added that the game has been doing “extremely well.”
When asked about the strong interest in Zelda and whether Nintendo expected products to sell out, Zyll said:
“Well, if we expected it, we wouldn’t be in that situation, right? At least not to this extent. I will tell you that it’s a global phenomenon. We have this issue absolutely everywhere. We apologize for that. That certainly is not the intent. We underestimated how well it would be received. And there’s certainly some markets that stand out.
The United States did extremely well as well. It’s a global phenomenon where they’re running out of product. The pre-sales are hitting their max, and certainly that’s what happened to us in Brazil.
We are working on replenishments of the special hardware and the software, but it’ll take a little bit of time. So I’m going to use this on you now: please be patient. But yeah, to answer your question, it caught us by surprise. We expected a positive response, but the magnitude, I mean, it’s amazing.”
Zyll was also asked if he could confirm that even Zelda’s special 40th Anniversary Nintendo Switch 2 Edition console would be restocked. Nintendo does have plans for that, but specifics are unclear.
We have the following statement:
“Yes. I can’t tell you dates right now. We’re working on it. I can’t tell you quantities right now. Again, all being worked on, but that is the plan that we have right now – the special controller, the hardware, the software.”
Zyll is an executive for the Brazilian market, but as we heard in the response above, he also has insight into what’s happening in North America. We do at least have confirmation that Best Buy will hold a midnight launch for Ocarina of Time and will have limited quantities of The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition Nintendo Switch 2 system and Pro Controller.
With demand already high, fans may want to check out our Zelda: Ocarina of Time pre-order bonus guide, which covers offers for various regions.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time heads to Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026, while the 40th Anniversary Edition console comes out a bit earlier on October 29.
Thanks to Jake for the tip.
