Epic Games has released Fortnite Battle Royale update v42.40, expanding Chapter 7 Season 4: Override with new Loot Hacks, additional Sprites and another round of gameplay improvements.

The update also changes parts of the loot pool, buffs the Sweeper Shotgun and introduces new Sprite Mastery rewards.

Several quality-of-life fixes arrive alongside the content update, including changes to weapon pickups, Locker sorting and movement behavior.

New Loot Hacks Join Battle Royale

One of the main additions in v42.40 is another expansion of Fortnite’s Loot Hack system.

Players can now access several additional weapons and items through Loot Hacks.

The newly supported options include:

  • Thorne’s Vampiric Blade
  • Finger Guns
  • Gatekeeper Shotgun
  • Hunting Rifle
  • Slap Splash
  • All Sprite variants

Loot Hacks are one of the core mechanics of Chapter 7 Season 4: Override.

They allow players to manipulate loot opportunities and create more specialized loadouts during a match.

Adding more options increases the number of possible combinations available through the system.

Several Items and Overrides Vaulted

Epic has also removed multiple items and Overrides from the active pool.

Midas’ Masterpiece from the Rift Anomaly has been vaulted alongside the Witch Broom Pocket Item.

Four Overrides have also been removed:

  • Super Shot
  • Big Boom
  • Action Hero
  • Healing Overdrive

These changes continue the constant loot rotation that has defined the Override season.

The Sweeper Shotgun received a separate balance adjustment, with Epic slightly increasing its fire rate.

The faster firing speed could make the Sweeper Shotgun more competitive in close-range engagements without completely changing its role.

Two New Sprites Arrive

Sprites remain another major focus of the season.

v42.40 introduces the Honey Sprite, which was selected through Epic’s Design A Sprite competition.

When players deal ranged weapon damage, the Honey Sprite has a chance to spawn bees at the location where the target was hit.

The One Wish Willow Sprite uses a different mechanic.

When its owner eliminates an opponent, it can extract the Sprites equipped by that player.

It can also push nearby enemies away when its owner takes damage.

There is a significant drawback, however.

Removing the One Wish Willow Sprite causes the player to become marked on the map.

Feature v42.40 Change
Loot Hacks Six new options
Sprites Honey and One Wish Willow
Sweeper Shotgun Increased fire rate
Sprite Mastery Final rewards page unlocked
Power Hours October 17

The update also unlocks the final page of Sprite Mastery rewards.

Quack Sprite Joins Sprite Mastery

The final Sprite Mastery page includes new Quack Sprites and an additional style for the Pixel Polli Outfit.

Quack Sprite has a progression-focused ability.

Whenever another Sprite carried by the player earns Sprite XP, Quack Sprite receives extra XP as well.

That makes it particularly useful for players still trying to finish their Sprite Mastery progression.

Power Hours Return on October 17

Epic is also bringing back Power Hours this weekend.

The next event takes place on October 17 and revolves around Trick or Treat Sprites.

All players will begin with an enhanced Freddy’s Nightmare weapon.

The weapon increases movement speed while equipped and can be used to slash nearby opponents.

Trick or Treat Sprite variants will also appear more frequently during the event.

Chests can additionally drop 1-Up Tokens and Portable Extractors.

The first session begins at 6 PM UTC.

A second round starts at 1 AM UTC on October 18.

Automatic Weapon Upgrades Added

One of the more practical gameplay changes concerns weapon pickups.

Players can now automatically swap to a higher-rarity version of a weapon they already carry simply by walking over it.

The feature requires Auto Pick Up Weapons to be enabled in the settings.

That removes an extra interaction during looting and could be particularly useful during fast-paced fights.

Epic also fixed several movement problems.

Holding the Sprint button while strafing and then moving forward now correctly activates sprint again.

An issue that slowed sideways movement when using high Forward Diagonal Angle values has also been fixed.

Locker and Discover Receive Improvements

The Locker received several quality-of-life updates.

Players can now sort cosmetics by Most Used, Last Used and Least Used.

Epic also fixed problems affecting randomized Locker presets and the Randomize function.

Several individual cosmetics received visual or animation fixes.

Discover is also being redesigned.

Epic says the refreshed interface is gradually rolling out and features new tile shapes, video previews, cleaner logos and more expressive modules.

Multiple Gameplay Bugs Fixed

v42.40 includes a long list of technical fixes.

The Mega Buster charged shot once again deals its intended area damage.

Players should no longer become stuck after defeating and possessing Freddy’s Animatronics.

Problems affecting the Prop Hunt Override, Hunter Scavenger Override and several Cheat Codes were also addressed.

Epic additionally reduced the head sizes of certain character models in Big Head Mode so they no longer obstruct aiming as heavily.

PC players receive further stability improvements, including fixes for crashes affecting certain AMD graphics cards.

Assessment

Fortnite v42.40 is not a complete seasonal overhaul, but it significantly expands the systems already introduced with Override.

New Loot Hacks and Sprites give players additional options during matches, while the Sweeper Shotgun buff and vault changes continue adjusting the current loot pool.

The Power Hours on October 17 add another limited-time reason to return.

More importantly, several practical improvements should make everyday gameplay smoother.

Automatic rarity upgrades, better Locker sorting and numerous movement and stability fixes make v42.40 one of the more substantial quality-of-life updates of the current season.
