《泰拉瑞亚》让仆从与哨兵使用相同槽位的建议

Make minions and sentries use the same slots

This is a big change that has been simmering in the back of my mind for literally years. Every time I've tried to sit down and come up with a cool summoner build that would integrate minions and sentries together, the fact that they use separate slots always manages to get in the way of some really cool and fun gameplay.

This is the core idea:

  • Merge minion slots and sentry slots into summon slots.
  • Make all minions cost 1 summon slot.
  • Make all sentries cost 2 summon slots.
  • Items and buffs that currently provide 1 minion slot should instead provide 1 summon slot.
  • Items and buffs that currently provide 1 sentry slot should instead provide 2 summon slots.

This change would open up a whole world of summoner gameplay. Core summoner armors (from the humble flinx fur coat to the end-game stardust armor) would be able to mix minions and sentries together without having to fret over how many slots of each they have. Tavernkeep armors would be able to have a squad of minions as support during the OOA event to boost their personal damage output.

I have no doubt that there would be a need to rebalance various summon weapon/equipment/buff stats (I'm sure the devs wouldn't want the base player character to suddenly have the ability to summon 3 minions by default ) but I am willing to accept such rebalances if it means I get to seamlessly dispel my minion army and drop in a whole firing line of sentries (or vice-versa).

This would make sentries useless, tbh. They’re already heavily impractical for many situations, since they can’t actually move, but having them compete with minion spots that actually CAN move and do damage to 90% of enemies would kill all usage beyond challenge runs.

You can already do this.

No support. Very no support.

They already compete with minions, not only in terms of armor and equipment but also in terms of playtime. If I wanna do a cool sentry build right now, I have to slog through the whole OOA event over and over again just to get some decent sentry-focused gear.

If the slots were shared, I could completely ignore the OOA event and use core summoner gear to use minions and sentries in any combination I'd like.

And yeah, sentries do have a lot of shortcomings because they can't move around like minions, so they're basically useless against most bosses. But they absolutely rock the house at large invasion-style events, thanks to their ability to just keep firing on whatever is near them, whereas minions are always getting their aggro broken just because I get a little too far away from their current target.

You can already do this.

Only way I know of is to build a whole second loadout with its own gear focused around sentries, and as I said above that requires slogging through the OOA event over and over again to get the stuff for it.

Maybe it can be done technically, but it cannot be done pragmatically.

You may as well say that melee and ranged and mage all compete with summoner.

Yes, but this is a ridiculous way of addressing that problem. The OOA being a slog is a known issue forever and the parsimonious response is to make it drop more medals so the player doesn't have to grind it. Not this.

Making 1 sentry slot count as two summon slots and making sentries cost 2 summon slots, would make no one want to run sentries. This also makes all OOA amours the best amours in the game, making post mech amours have 4 summon slots and post golem amours have 6 summon slots. Along with all the stats that OOA amours have.

But why would you, given that Sentries are far weaker than Minions?

The slots being separated into Sentry and Minion slots benefits Sentries because you can use them without losing out on Minion DPS. Merging the slots together benefits the stronger of the two, which is unambiguously Minions at the expense of Sentries.

You may as well say that melee and ranged and mage all compete with summoner.

They do, but that's a competition that makes sense. Different damage types should compete with eachother, but no damage type should compete with itself, and that's what summoner is currently doing.

Only other damage type that comes close to this is Ranged with bows vs guns, but only just barely. There's only one armor that gives separate boosts (shroomite) and arrows get more unique accessories for creating interesting effects compared to guns, which tend to be about raw damage. Meanwile, with summoner, there's a hard split between minions and sentries because armors give you slots for one or slots for another.

This is where rebalancing comes in, starting with boosting the capabilities of sentries and tweaking the balance between slots gained and damaged gained from summoner armors. I won't deny that the Tavernkeep armors and those +1 sentry accessories would be insanely powerful if the devs made this change without a balance pass, but all that that indicates is the need for sentries to be buffed big time, not that making all the slots just one kind of slot would be an inherently bad idea.

Okay? We sometimes call these "subclasses" but I don't see why "no damage type should compete with itself" is a good rule, and you state it like it's self-evident.

Seems pretty self-evident to me. So far as this game goes, I appreciate soft subclasses like guns vs bows, but if I booted up the game one day and I had to go down entirely separate melee armor paths for swords vs flails I'd probably delete the game from my library and get a refund that accounts for 13 years of inflation.

If making sentries and minions share the same slot requires basically the entirety of summoner and all of their stats to be reworked, perhaps it would be best to just... buff sentries normally and not have to rework every armor minion and sentry to accomodate for the slot change?

See, this was an invitation to make your reasoning evident to someone who isn't your self. You realize the devs aren't just alter egos of you? You're going to have to convince someone outside your own skull of your position if you really want this.

Instead you say absurd and hopefully hyperbolic things about how the wrong kind of melee rework would make you, not just give up on melee and play one of the other classes or a hybrid style, but try to get a refund of the entire game with extra sugar on top. Not convincing! I would encourage you to say things you actually mean.

As others have said, this is just a strict nerf to the already notoriously bad sentries. Sentries right now are free extra damage on top of minions, they don't compete, they compliment. Making them share slots would make them compete, and Abigail would use those sentry slots better than sentries ever did

Idk what else to say. I see a vision of what could be, and either I’m just bad at explaining it (most likely, it was a hot day at work today and my brain is pretty cooked) or most of y'all just aren't able to see it (least likely, but not impossible) or maybe something else (no false dichotomies here lol).

If I just wanted a simple sentry buff, that's all I would've suggested, and everyone would've probably agreed, and we'd all pat ourselves on the back and log off. I posted this idea simply because I've been sitting on it for a long while and it just managed to dig its way out of my brain today. I made a bold suggestion because over the last 10+ years of development I've watched the devs completely flip the script of this game's mechanics (just look at mage now) and figured I'd shoot my shot.

I've appreciated your input up to this point, but as the kids used to say:

"It's not that deep."

  • Make all minions cost 1 summon slot.
  • Make all sentries cost 2 summon slots.

I mean, given that sentries are generally worse than minions, wouldn't it be better to flip that ratio around instead? Getting a whole lot more sentries could be an okay tradeoff for being sentry main. And that way you only need to tweak with just the sentry's side of things to bring it up to standard instead of rebalancing the whole class.

Why not just solve  that problem instead? Why not suggest items that increase your sentry count that don't require you to fight the Old One's Army? Currently there are none of those; there are zero items that give you more sentries that aren't from OOA, and I definitely agree that this is ridiculous, so why not try to fix that problem instead? Why suggest something that requires an entire rebalance of summoner to be reasonable?

Correction: There is ONE item that increases your sentry slots without doing OOA. That is the Stardust Helmet giving +1

which isn't available until the pillars

Not even then, it's only available after Moon Lord, and I don't think I need explain why that's a problem if you're trying to use sentries during your playthrough.

I'd be open to a 1-to-1 ratio, rebalancing sentries so they take up the same slot size. I was originally going for 2 per with the idea that sentries could be buffed to hit way harder than they currently do, but a simple 1-to-1 with a big base damage buff to sentries across the board could work.

Specifically because I'd like summoner gear that doesn't require me to swap back and forth between loadouts every time I wanna swap between minions and sentries on the fly. If I just wanted more sentry-centric armor and accessories, I would've suggested that in the beginning.

That +1 sentry on the Helmet is so strange and forgettable. It honestly would be better if it just boosted sentries in some other way, that way if you took a Heavy Sling tinker it would hit harder than usual.
