The new Mass Effect game may never see the light of day following EA’s latest announcement. The fifth installment in the beloved sci-fi franchise had been in development for nearly five years since its initial reveal.

EA will shut down its long-running development studio BioWare as part of a plan to cut 400 jobs, reports Bloomberg. The shocking update comes on the back of EA’s strategy to reduce expenses amid growing financial burden. BioWare was working on the next Mass Effect, but it’s not the case anymore.

Of the 400 jobs cut by Electronic Arts, 50 were at BioWare. Founded in 1995, the developer was acquired by EA in 2007. In its early years, the studio delivered several blockbuster titles across the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises.

However, later releases, including Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem, received largely underwhelming responses. BioWare’s most recent major release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, also fell short of expected sales targets last year.

EA’s latest cuts extend beyond BioWare as the company faces mounting financial pressure

EA wants to reduce the growing expenditure by any means necessary at the moment. The company is trying to save $700 million by cutting research and development costs. Besides BioWare, the publisher’s other staff members have been affected as well due to the layoff announcement.

“Across our portfolio, we’re making deliberate choices to align talent and investments where we see the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth,” wrote EA Chief Operating Officer David Tinson and Chief Studios Officer Cam Weber in a letter to staff.

Notably, the next game in The Sims franchise, codenamed Project Lotus, has also been canceled. Instead, EA is shifting its focus to another entry, codenamed Project Evergreen. Meanwhile, the publisher will continue investing in other major franchises, including Apex Legends, Star Wars Jedi, and Battlefield.
