Getting your first PS5 is exciting, but opening the PlayStation Plus Extra catalog can leave you with one big problem; deciding what to download first. With so many great games waiting for you, it’s easy to spend more time scrolling than actually playing, especially if you’ve missed out on PlayStation’s biggest adventures over the years.

So, I’ve put together 10 games every new PlayStation owner should play, with a few sequels thrown in for anyone who finishes one adventure and immediately wants more. I’m focusing on PS5 versions wherever possible, alongside a couple of PS4 classics you can also enjoy on your new console, so grab your controller and let’s find your next favorite game!

Death Stranding Director’s Cut

Death Stranding Director’s Cut is an open-world action-adventure game following Sam Porter Bridges, a courier tasked with reconnecting isolated communities after a catastrophe blurred the boundary between the living and the dead. Your objective is to deliver supplies across a devastated America, planning routes, managing cargo and crossing difficult terrain, all while dealing with different kind of threats along the way. Just a heads-up: this is a lengthy adventure, especially if you take on optional deliveries.

The Director’s Cut adds new story missions, weapons, delivery tools, and much more!

Demon’s Souls

Demon’s Souls is a remake of the game that laid the foundations for the Soulslike genre, rebuilding FromSoftware’s 2009 original for PS5. This action RPG is set in Boletaria, a kingdom consumed by a mysterious fog after its ruler awakens an ancient demonic entity. As an adventurer drawn to the fallen realm, you explore this hostile world, fighting powerful enemies while collecting souls to strengthen your character. The game combines different character builds with demanding combat, where learning enemy patterns and finding safer routes are essential to surviving each area.

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut

Ghost of Tsushima is an open-world action-adventure game set during the Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274, following the journey of samurai Jin Sakai as he fights to liberate his home island. The game combines phenomenal sword combat and stealth mechanics with a story about loyalty, as Jin adopts unconventional tactics to defeat the invaders, challenging the traditions he was raised to follow.

The Director’s Cut includes the Iki Island expansion, with side quests and optional activities offering plenty more to explore beyond the main story.

God of War (2018)

I think this one needs no introduction, but…

God of War, winner of Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2018, is an action-adventure game following Kratos and his son Atreus through the dangerous world of Norse mythology. Their journey begins with a promise to scatter the ashes of Atreus’ mother, leading them through encounters with gods and monsters as they learn to understand one another. Heavy and impactful melee combat is mixed with good exploration to shape the adventure, with a lot of optional quests and bosses to discover along the way.

If you enjoy this one, God of War: Ragnarök continues their story and is also available through PS Plus Extra.

Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 is an online cooperative third-person shooter that sends squads of up to four players across hostile planets to fight for Super Earth. Missions involve completing a wide variety of objectives while surviving enemy attacks and securing a safe extraction, using weapons and orbital support that can be just as dangerous to your teammates as to the enemy. With replayable missions and an ongoing Galactic War, it’s built to keep you coming back for as long as you want to stay in the fight.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

Horizon Zero Dawn is an open-world action RPG set in a distant future where human tribes live among the ruins of modern civilization and enormous machines dominate the wilderness. Playing as Aloy, you set out to uncover your origins and the catastrophe that transformed the world, primarily using bows with different types of arrows to exploit the machines’ weaknesses, along with traps and other tools.

The PS5 remaster includes The Frozen Wilds expansion, and between its additional story and the many side quests, there’s plenty here for a lengthy adventure.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is an open-world superhero action-adventure game following an experienced Peter Parker as he balances protecting New York from a growing criminal threat with his everyday responsibilities. While swinging through New York is a lot of fun on its own, Spider-Man also offers a fluid and addictive combat system and an engaging storyline!

The PS5 remastered version includes The City That Never Sleeps story expansions and new suits to unlock!

If you enjoy this journey, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales offers a short follow-up, while Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 brings Peter and Miles together for another adventure, with both games also available through PS Plus Extra.

Shadow of the Colossus

Shadow of the Colossus is an action-adventure game following Wander, a young man who enters a forbidden land with his horse Agro in search of a power that could bring a girl named Mono back to life. To do so, he must defeat towering creatures by discovering how to climb their bodies and reach their vulnerable points, making each battle a puzzle in itself. This PS4 remake is playable on PS5 and offers one of the shortest (and greatest) adventures on the list.

The Last of Us Part I

The Last of Us Part I is an action-adventure game with stealth and survival horror elements, following smuggler Joel as he escorts 14-year-old Ellie across a United States devastated by a fungal-zombie outbreak. Scarce supplies force you to think carefully about when to sneak past infected creatures and hostile survivors and when to face them in brutal combat, using guns or whatever else Joel can find along the way.

The PS5 remake fully rebuilds the original game and includes the Left Behind story expansion.

If you enjoyed this one, The Last of Us Part II Remastered is also available through PS Plus Extra, continuing the story with Ellie and Abby in an updated version of the sequel that won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2020.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection brings together two action-adventure games remastered for PS5, with the series’ cinematic storytelling giving the feel of an action movie while you climb through ancient ruins, solve puzzles and get yourself in a lot of gunfights.

In Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Nathan Drake comes out of retirement to help his brother pursue a legendary pirate treasure, while the shorter The Lost Legacy follows Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross on an expedition in India.

These 10 picks should give you plenty to enjoy on your new PS5, so make the most of your PS Plus Extra subscription, choose whichever catches your eye and take your time exploring the rest of the catalog.
