With only a few weeks left in launch, the hype for Phantom Blade Zero is through the roof. Previews of the upcoming action game are already calling it a scintillating GOTY contender that will blow fans away thanks to its inspiring combat.
When you consider its unique and inventive approach to the action genre, in addition to features like the honor system, Phantom Blade Zero being one of the strongest contenders for GOTY is no surprise. Now, developer S-Game has revealed another interesting aspect of the game that is certainly going to entice fans.
Why it matters: Making bosses reactive is a much smarter way of increasing the difficulty for players instead of just buffing up their health and attack damage.

In a new interview with Combo Infinito, Phantom Blade Zero director Soulframe Liang revealed that fighting bosses will feel like fighting other players on the game’s Hellwalker difficulty. Thanks to very intelligent AI, the bosses will possess dynamic behavior and adapt to the player’s moves instead of fighting in a fixed pattern.
We want players to feel like they’re really controlling their character against another player. In Hellwalker mode, we created this kind of dynamic behavior.
The director explained that enemies will react to your movements instead of acting on a fixed sequence of combos, while trying to force a mistake from players. Soulframe Liang further emphasized that in other action games, fans eventually beat difficult bosses after gaining enough experience and recognising their patterns.
Hence, instead of buffing up boss health and damage to increase difficulty, Phantom Blade Zero developers opted for adaptable behavior instead in the Hellwalker mode. Moreover, the game’s bosses will also feature certain abilities that only appear on the greater difficulty modes, so players can have a fresh challenge to look forward to.

S-Game’s Phantom Blade Zero has already had a brilliant commercial start, selling 300k copies on pre-orders and topping the Steam best-sellers chart weeks before launch. With features like adaptive difficulty only increasing anticipation, the action game is looking set to exceed expectations on the commercial front too.
