EA shuts down BioWare and cancels the next Mass Effect under buyout cost cuts

Electronic Arts confirmed on 21 October 2026 that it is shutting down BioWare and ending early development on the next Mass Effect, the first major restructuring since the publisher’s $55 billion leveraged buyout left it carrying roughly $18 billion in debt.
BioWare announced the closure itself in a statement on X: “Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.”

The buyout maths behind the cuts
The timing is not a coincidence. In August 2026, a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, alongside Affinity Partners and Silver Lake, took EA private in a $55 billion debt-funded buyout. The deal loaded the company with around $18 billion in debt, costing roughly $1.8 billion a year in interest alone, and EA promised investors $700 million in annual cost savings, $170 million of that from what it called organisational efficiencies.
Two months on, the first instalment of that savings plan has arrived. A widely relayed report put the cuts at around 400 EA jobs, roughly 3 per cent of the workforce, including about 50 at BioWare. The closure is the only part EA and BioWare have confirmed directly.
EA chief operating officer David Tinson and chief studios officer Cam Weber told staff in a letter circulated on Wednesday: “We’ve made the decision not to move forward with this development, which means we’re closing the studio and our Edmonton workspace.”
What dies and what survives
The next Mass Effect, announced in 2020 with only teasers since, was in early development at a small team and is now cancelled without ever having a title. A Sims franchise project code-named Project Lotus is also being ended, though reports differ on whether it is paused or cancelled outright, with EA refocusing on a project code-named Evergreen.
The letter pointed the other way: EA will keep investing in sports games, Apex Legends and Battlefield, where executives called Battlefield 6 “a great success”, plus action-adventure projects including the next Star Wars Jedi game and Marvel’s Iron Man. A new Star Wars Battlefront is reportedly in development at Respawn and DICE, though EA has not named it. The memo also flags Project Gridiron, a social-first open-world American football project.
BioWare’s last release was 2024’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which reviewed well but missed EA’s sales expectations, and the studio had already been downsized to one game at a time before this closure ended its 30-year run.
What it means for players
Existing BioWare games remain on sale, with no regional availability changes announced.
