EA 关停 BioWare 工作室并取消《质量效应》新作开发
New Mass Effect Cancelled as EA Shuts Down BioWare

The announcement came on October 21 through an official statement published by EA, confirming that the company has decided to discontinue early development of the next Mass Effect and close BioWare’s Edmonton studio.

The closure is part of a larger restructuring effort that will reportedly result in approximately 400 layoffs across EA, representing around 3% of its workforce. According to Bloomberg, roughly 50 of those positions are at BioWare.
In its announcement, EA explained that the studio had been operating with a small team working on the early stages of the next Mass Effect game. However, the publisher has now decided not to proceed with the project.
“We’ve made the decision not to move forward with this development, which means we’re closing the studio and our Edmonton workspace,” EA stated.
The company described BioWare as a legendary developer that helped define the role-playing genre and acknowledged the significance of its closure.
BioWare also addressed the news through an official statement on X, thanking players and developers who supported the studio throughout its history.
“Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending,” the developer confirmed.
The studio added that its immediate priority is supporting the developers affected by the closure and recognizing their contributions to its games.
Founded in 1995, BioWare became one of the industry’s most respected RPG developers through titles including Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect.
However, the studio faced significant challenges in recent years. Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem struggled to meet expectations, while its latest release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, also fell short of EA’s commercial targets.
The cancellation is particularly disappointing considering that BioWare had previously reassured fans about the franchise’s future. In its November 2025 N7 Day update, executive producer Mike Gamble confirmed that the studio remained committed to developing the next Mass Effect.
That project had originally been announced in 2020, although BioWare never revealed an official release date or gameplay footage.
Dragon Age Veilguard
The restructuring follows EA’s $55 billion acquisition and transition into private ownership earlier this year. The publisher is now concentrating resources on fewer major projects, including future Battlefield titles, Apex Legends, Marvel’s Iron Man, and the next Star Wars Jedi game.
EA also confirmed that Respawn Entertainment and DICE will collaborate on a new project, while development on The Sims project codenamed Lotus has been paused.
While the next Mass Effect game has officially been cancelled, EA has not announced whether the franchise itself will be permanently discontinued. The future of Dragon Age and other BioWare properties also remains uncertain.
The closure marks the end of more than three decades of BioWare’s history, leaving behind some of the most celebrated role-playing games ever made.
