Install the CIA straight from your 3DS: scan this with FBI (Remote Install > Scan QR Code).
Features
- Stereoscopic 3D with depth-driven auto convergence and a comfort target
- Widescreen 400x240 on the top screen, with the game's backdrops stretched to fill it
- A 3D sky that wraps around the scene and sits at its depth (New 3DS)
- 60 fps on a New 3DS (an interpolated frame between each two of the game's own)
- Camera on the C-Stick: it turns and zooms the camera without holding R
- Runs on Old 3DS / 2DS too (slower, see Performance)
Installing
- CIA (Goemon64Recompiled3D-3ds-<commit>.cia): install with FBI or another CIA installer, or scan the QR code above. It shows on the HOME Menu as "Goemon 64: Recompiled 3D". Use the CIA on an Old 3DS / 2DS.
- .3dsx (Goemon64Recompiled3D-3ds-<commit>.zip): extract to the root of the SD card and start 3ds/Goemon64/Goemon64.3dsx from the Homebrew Launcher.
You need your own ROM: the US version of Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, in .z64 format (the 16 MB file the PC version asks for), at sdmc:/3ds/Goemon64/mnsg.us.z64. The game checks the ROM's hash at start and deletes a file that doesn't match, so copy it rather than move it. Saves and settings.ini are kept in the same folder.
For sound, dump your console's DSP firmware once with Luma3DS: open the Rosalina menu (L + D-pad down + SELECT), then Miscellaneous options > Dump DSP firmware. It goes to sdmc:/3ds/dspfirm.cdc. Without it the game runs silent.
Controls
- A / B: A / B
- L: Z
- R: R
- START: START
- X or D-pad up: C-Up
- Y or D-pad down: C-Down
- ZL or D-pad left: C-Left
- ZR or D-pad right: C-Right
- Circle Pad: analog stick
- C-Stick: the camera (R + C buttons, repeated while held), or the plain C buttons (Controls settings)
The game never reads the N64's L or D-pad. R with the C buttons moves the camera: C-Left/Right turn it, C-Up/Down zoom. The C-Stick does that by itself and keeps turning while held; the camera eases back behind Goemon once you let go.
SELECT opens the settings on the bottom screen: 3D, the sticks' deadzones and the C-Stick, frame rate, sky, music and sound volume.
Hold SELECT for a second to save a screenshot (both eyes and the touch screen) to sdmc:/3ds/Goemon64/screenshots/.
Stereo 3D settings
The 3D slider turns 3D on and sets its strength. The settings' 3D page tunes it:
- 3D depth: separation at the top of the slider (default 50)
- Convergence: where the screen's plane sits in the scene (default 2.0); nearer things pop out, farther things go in
- HUD depth: where the HUD, menus and text sit (50 = on the screen)
- Auto convergence (on): brings the screen's plane nearer when something comes close to the camera (a wall, a character in a close-up, the zoomed camera), so it doesn't pop out too far
- Comfort target: how far out of the screen auto convergence lets things come (0 by default; higher for more pop-out, lower keeps everything behind the screen)
- Ghost reduction (off by default): eases ghosting on screens that show it
The Game page's Sky setting picks a 3D sky that wraps around the scene (the default on a New 3DS) or the game's own flat scrolling backdrop (the default on an Old 3DS, where it costs far less).
Performance
- New 3DS / New 2DS XL: 60 fps most of the time; the heaviest areas drop back toward 50, and a scene too heavy to draw twice falls back to 30 for that frame. Set Frame rate to Game on the Game page for the original frame rate (30 in play and menus, 60 in many cutscenes).
- Old 3DS / 2DS: about 20-30 fps where the game asks 30, lower in the heaviest scenes. It starts at 30 fps without in-between frames, with the flat sky. Install the CIA: it leaves enough memory to hold the ROM, where the Homebrew Launcher may not, and then the ROM is read from the SD card with slower loads.

AI use
The 3DS port, including its code, documentation and the rt64-3ds renderer, was written with the help of AI tools (Claude), under my direction and with my testing on real consoles.
