Epic Games has reportedly delayed its unannounced Disney shooter and told developers to build it as an AI first project, with no new release date set.

Epic Games has delayed its unannounced Disney collaboration shooter and told the team building it to move to an “AI first” production model, according to people familiar with the project.

No more hand-written code

The game, a shooter featuring Marvel and Star Wars characters, had been slated for release in March. No new date has been given. Outlets differ on whether that March target meant 2026 or 2027.

People familiar with the project said development had fallen behind schedule, partly because Epic misjudged how many staff and how much time the game would need. Developers were told about the change on a video call the week before the story emerged, and some were reported to be stunned. In an internal message, one of the game’s directors wrote: “No more hand-written code,” adding that the game’s art would be “generated with full AI workflows” using tools including Anthropic’s Claude, with staff overseeing the output.

What Epic says

Epic has not commented on the delay itself, but its statements confirm the broader push into AI development. Communications director Jake Jones said in a statement: “We’re embracing AI-accelerated development, led by Epic developers who are the visionaries and creative drivers for everything we do.”

Chief executive Tim Sweeney wrote in a post on X that Epic has a huge pivot underway, moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration, and said the aim is not to do the same work with fewer people but to let every team build more using Unreal.

Disney’s stake

Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic in 2024 and took an equity stake as part of a multi-game partnership, with this shooter due to be the first release. The project is still unannounced, and no platforms or title have been stated. Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
