Story Highlight

Metro 2039 physical copies will require an internet unlock and an additional download.
The disc won’t ship with the full game, and 4A Games decided to skip a two-disc physical release.
Fans have raised concerns about the internet requirement, but many still remain excited for the first-person shooter.

Metro 2039 will offer the most brutal and dark entry in the series next year, throwing players back into the unforgiving first-person shooter-based survival style of gameplay that fans have come to adore.

The title could also be the last Metro game to launch on a physical disc, but Metro 2039 won’t be available fully on disc.

Why it matters: Many gamers aren’t fond of games that don’t ship fully on disc, arguing that mandatory online downloads become problematic due to preservation later on in a game’s life.

METRO 2039 will require an initial download as the game does not fit fully on one disc. To make sure our community gets to experience the game at the same time, you will need an internet connection initially to unlock the game. The game does not otherwise require internet.

Metro 2039’s physical release will require an internet connection before players can access the game, since the full experience will not be available directly from the disc.

According to the official Twitter account, boxed copies will need an online unlock and extra download to be playable. This is because 4A Games was unable to fit the entire game on a single disc.

Instead of opting for a two-disc solution, the team decided to accommodate physical disc users through an additional mandatory download.

The internet connection requirement aside, Metro 2039 has many fans excited. 4A Games’ previous Metro titles were quite well-received, so it remains to be seen if the same will be true of the latest entry.
