Pretty nuts. The 'fully funded' target was $100k that has now been vastly surpassed many, many times over. Still, the creators obviously had grand expectations and the game was always going to hit millions - but the speed of it getting here has been impressive.
It has broken the previous record for physical game made by the Cosmere TTRPG, which got a total of bit over $15 million. Cyberpunk is on its steady way to $16 million and beyond.

Neat! The artwork looks quite nice, and I love all the dice.

Some of those tiers, though, whew. Happy for those that can drop $8k for a new TCG but that's too rich for my blood lol.

Princess Bubblegum

So ridiculous that this needed a Kickstarter. I would be slightly tempted if any of the Judy artwork actually felt drawn to appeal to sapphics.

Humanity

I don't know much about TCG's and the kickstarter page is huge but from what I understand (from the tidbit at the end of the backer page) they are doing this in conjunction with CDPR? So CDPR is licensing them out all the asset use and I assume taking a cut from all this at the end of the day?

With these kinds of big brand launches on Kickstarter nowadays, it's used more as a preorder quantity measure than anything else.

Peak Design do it with many of their new bag launches, Brandon Sanderson has continued to do crowdfunds for his stuff etc.

Tbh for new ventures with established IP it's a no brainer, majorly derisks your investment and gets you a lot of free marketing. But even with it being a no brainer it's still feels incredibly odd when big comapni aren't willing to take big swings without the fans essentially promising the investment.

It can't be worth giving up 30% or whatever Kickstarter's cut is for doing this, can it?

underFlorence

Hope this one works out, but TCG kickstarters always felt like such a weird business model to me. Needing (generally) a ton of upfront production costs for printing and the whole question of distribution just feel so at odds with the kickstarter funding model.

WhateverItTakes

Guess that becomes part of your risk assessment? I dunno I guess for starting a new product line your CFO or whatever might be willing to take the hit up front then you're free to exploit from there.

BrokenMill

This seems to be riding the TCG hype bubble nicely, but actually supporting a TCG for years is a massive undertaking. It might be alright for collectors, but I don't expect the game to have any legs.

Kickstarter takes about 6% on average from my experience, not too bad actually.

reelbigeddy

The fees are on the Kickstarter site -

Kickstarter fee
5% of total funds raised
Payment processing fees
3% + $0.30 per pledge
Pledges under $10 have a discounted micropledge fee of 5% + $0.08 per pledge

Seen a lot of videos regarding this topic and it basically,

"good for the company with the big show out, don't fuck up support for community and local down the line."

"Good that you able to capture the collector/scalper market, how many really buy your game to play tho"

And

"Dice??? Yeah this gonna end support in a year and a half"

Mind you, the last Biggest Kickstarter TCG ever, Altered tcg, now the 2nd most funded at 7millions

Kickstarter huh? A lot of campaigns fizzle out. Hope this actually goes somewhere

Saw a post elsewhere where a collector was lamenting about how there is no real collector value for this since all the Nova rare cards being packed into every single backers stuff. IE all the unlocked foil cards.

Me, I don't care about the value and rarity going up. Also, thanks to the KS model you can buy as many booster boxes as you want. No need to hope that your local shop gets extra in or have to go buy scalper prices.

One of the main reasons I stopped playing Magic. Got tired of the cost and didn't to just get a commander deck I wanted.

I hope they do KS for every expansion. Problem is, this would give no incentive for gaming stores to carry the product and or run tournaments. Which I would probably attempt to go to for a change.

AaronD

There doesn't seem much of a game there. Like Altered I suspect it'll be dead in a few years.

I'm a fan of the erotic thriller genre

If this had been more a marvel champions solo coop game I might have been in. But just a straight up tag isn't what I'm looking for

Yup. The game dev is weird co

Cutting out the middle man, I e the store, is a bad move. Especially when your game is 1v1 with no digital client. Unless you are cool with just collecting the card and never play the game. I don't think we ever saw a tcg that just released through kickstarter and nothing else. Not to mention, that would put a logistics problem on their part every time something wrong happened, example is again, Altered (and Metazoo before it) some backers get absolute fucked and still haven't received their backing reward, and Altered has Asmondee behind them

Regarding the "collector" who lamenting that, they are financial bros who cosplayed as collectors, if that's their gripes tbh.

beatmaster

I don't quite understand what you get for the $7999 - is this for shops or something?

jon bones

i don't understand how people can afford to play TCGs

Trace

I don't quite understand what you get for the $7999 - is this for shops or something?

Shops + "investors" hoping it takes off.

gutshot

Altered was the last big TCG to blow up on Kickstarter and it just recently folded after a couple years of underwhelming sales. It takes a lot more than a big Kickstarter for a successful TCG.

Now, granted, having a known IP will help, especially in the pre-order phase. But the harsh reality is that it is immensely difficult to succeed at a large-scale in the TCG space. Even absolutely massive IPs like Disney Animation and League of Legends have resulted in mostly niche TCGs, at least from a collectors and player base standpoint. Neither have come close to challenging Pokemon or Magic in those regards. And I imagine Cyberpunk will fall far, far behind after this initial pre-release hype wears off.

Aselith

It's the booster boxes and the uncut sheets that really are the value of this whole thing. Uncut sheets are collectors items and then you get 54 booster boxes which is around $148 a booster box plus you get the starter decks and dive and other misc stuff. So yeah, for shops that are going to resell the booster boxes and card sheets. If you look at the lower tiers, they all work out to the booster boxes being about $150 so if you were going to order the booster boxes anyway, you get a discount on the boxes plus all the additional stuff to sell on top of it.

maze001

I got burned by the last TCG kickstarter I backed (PURGE) and a number of other kickstarter TCGs have gone belly up over the years, so nowadays I'm very weary of any kickstarter TCG. Still, I hope the game succeeds and finds a community. There's clearly interest.

Looks cool. I just hate pre-orders.

Rover

the game seems 'okay' (in a sea of just-okay games), and without store support or regular releases this thing is DOA as a game.

nilbog

Pledges just hit over $16 million. That's amazing, had no idea this would be so hype.

Tace

I saw this the other day and I'm into it, but still need to see the game played in action. Sounded overly complicated tbh

Won

This remains such a weird product to me. The IP feels has so little potential for a long running TCG. I doubt it will see much play on a local level either.

I would have said, not worth the effort, why even bother. But then you look at the number and what do I know.

OffbrandGoblinShark

I almost went for it until I saw the Judy artwork, it feels so wrong. The face is so different

A couple of sapphic friends I have also had an immediate negative reaction to that artwork

signal

Said this in the other thread but while I think this is a weird IP for a TCG, it's actually being carried by major distros unlike some other KS TCGs so in-store availability will be a thing at least.

They're also selling prerelease kits and seem to have some amount of organized play plans.

The inflated numbers makes me think it is mostly speculators and resellers looking to cash in on the pre-release hype. If you can get booster boxes for cheap through a big KS pledge then sell them on TCGPlayer for 2x-3X the cost, you can make a lot of money before the whole thing crashes.

Maynerd

Who's buying $8k in cards? These people are nuts.

Silvergun-Blue

Not a fan of the cartoon style Judy art either but the other piece I've seen I quite like. Looking through the galleries, there's a few artists involved.

And is there any mention that this is actually hand-drawn? Any artists names?
Idea: Low value cards are AI-generated while the high value cards are hand-drawn! :D

People need to see these as pre-order/marketing launches, not crowdfunding per se

Cards are signed by artists.

How is Lorcana doing? I wanted to try it out when it first appeared but never any product to buy. The KS model will seem top help with that issue

Griselbrand

This kickstarter is precisely why I bought the 2021 relaunch set. I was disappointed to see that the Cyberpunk game was a TCG instead of following the CCG model so I went the Netrunner route instead.

chainlinkspiral

Hubworld Eidalon seems to be the spiritual follow up to Netrunner, along with the actual follow up, Null Signal. Hubworld is nearing release, and is looking great.

Depend on location, around me they are basically dead.
But apparently it still has a decent following.
They are gonna do another rotation come Aug with the new set tho, so if you buy in now, watch out for that

Ferda

I love Cyberpunk so this was an easy back for me. I ended up going with the $350 tier and added on an Accessories Bundle. I'm thinking about jumping up to the $499 tier but I also might want to add another Accessories Bundle so I haven't decided yet. I'm kind of waiting to see how many cards there are going to be. I'm shocked and amazed how many people are able to back the $8000 tier, that shits crazy to me.

StrangeRoboMemory

Almost 23 million CAD, pretty wild. I love the game (and anime) and this has really slick presentation so I understand the hype, but the actual gameplay here just seems really...boring? After going over the rules, there's not much to it. I'm going to try out the print-and-play decks with a friend so we'll see how it feels, but it's not really catchy on the mechanics-front. Also, if this is going to be a long-term TCG, it seems they've already hit the ceiling on the source material. Many they can get one more set out of remaining characters and variants, but that's it?

This is where I'm at, I think the cards look great but the gameplay in the initial 'Alpha kit' that they sent out to content creators seems really thin and they have mostly been showing new card art and not the full text of cards which doesn't instill a lot of confidence in me that they have a really deep, fleshed out game yet. I would love to see them to show a game between more complex decks if they can. Also doesn't help that much of the marketing behind the Kickstarter feels a little collector focused and the timing of the last really massive Kickstarter TCG, Altered, announcing that they were ending their game.

Between all that I'm a little weary to back, maybe if there was a slightly cheaper tier that included the beta box that has the bulk of all the stretch goal stuff in it. $350 for a game that has a chance of never seeing play at an LGS near me is a tough sell and if I just wanted starter decks I would just wait for the game to be proven before throwing money into it.

signal

Null Signal's Netrunner >>> everything but was talking to a friend about this yesterday and even though I dunno how deep the Cyberpunk IP is to maintain a TCG (even with everything you can grab from the TTPG, game, anime, etc.) I think there might be room for this solely for people who want a cyberpunky TCG to play. For all the mainstream TCGs that exist there aren't a ton where you can do stereotypical cyberpunk shit like play hacker consoles or whatever so I feel like it might have legs if just for that.

Buuut maybe not who knows. Still, almost $24m cad with 10 days to go lol

Shrennin

Welp, I am going in with this one. Hope it succeeds.

signal

Seems like some people are getting their KS products. Also stuff like the starter deck contents & comprehensive rules were revealed this past week
