Mycopunk launched into Early Access on Steam on July 10, 2025, from developer Pigeons at Play and publisher Devolver Digital. It’s a mission-based co-op looter shooter where you play as one of a ragtag squad of robot rejects hired by the SAXON corporation. Your job is to drop onto the planet of New Atlas and clear out a deadly fungal infestation that’s taken over the local technology. The full 1.0 version leaves Early Access today, October 20, 2026, for both PC and PS5 (and arrives day one on the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog).

I went in expecting a decent but familiar co-op shooter. What I got was something much more fun and distinctive than I anticipated.

Gameplay

The moment-to-moment gameplay is the biggest strength. You pick from four robots—Wrangler, Bruiser, Scrapper, or Glider—each with their own movement tools and abilities. I spent most of my time on the Scrapper, using the jetpack and shared grapple poles, but I tried all of them and they all feel good. Movement is excellent: you can slide, dash, grapple, jetpack, or glide across the maps while shooting. There’s no stamina bar and no traditional ammo hunting. Damage enemies with one weapon and the other refills, so you stay in the fight instead of managing resources.

Enemies are fungal robots and bigger abominations. You can shoot off limbs, shields, and weapons, but leftover parts can get picked up and used against you if you’re not careful. It creates a nice layer of chaos. Missions take place across several regions and include horde clears, payload escorts, and bigger set pieces. Difficulty is flexible—you can adjust swarm intensity and threat level separately—so it’s easy to find a level of challenge that feels right whether you’re solo or with friends.

The upgrade system is the other standout. Mods come in different shapes and you fit them into a grid on your weapons and character. It’s part inventory management, part puzzle. I spent a lot of time rearranging pieces to create builds that actually felt different, from healing support setups to ridiculous weapon mutations. There’s a big pool of hand-crafted upgrades, and finding new ones kept me wanting to run more missions.

Between runs you return to an orbital dropship hub. You can mess around with minigames, hang out, and talk to Roachard Cox, the insectoid SAXON veteran who gives you your briefings. The humor lands well without getting in the way of the shooting.

I played both solo and in co-op. It works surprisingly well alone thanks to the movement tools and scalable difficulty, but it’s at its best with friends. Sessions are easy to pick up and put down, which I appreciated.

Final Thoughts:

Mycopunk is a really fun co-op shooter with excellent movement, a creative upgrade system, and a personality that stands out. I had a much better time with it than I expected going in. The core loop already feels solid even in Early Access, and the upcoming 1.0 launch should add more content and polish.

There are some rough edges. Progression can feel grindy once you have a strong build, some missions start to blend together after a while, and there are the occasional balance or technical issues you’d expect from Early Access. None of that ruined the experience for me, though. Steam reviews are Very Positive for a reason.

If you like chaotic co-op shooters, movement-focused FPS games, or just want something with a weird sense of humor and deep buildcrafting, Mycopunk is an easy recommendation.

Score: 8.5/10

Mycopunk is available for PC via Steam and PlayStation 5.
