The sandbox game creation and game playing platform s&box from Garry's Mod and Rust developer Facepunch is going through a big rethink. It's also going to go free to play by the end of the year, because people just weren't buying into the idea.
Sounds like steps in the right direction. They're already competing with Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, Garry's Mod and more - and had very little to show for it due to their focus on developers without bringing a proper game to it themselves. Now, they're going to be focusing a lot more on players, with a new Sandbox Game that will have "parity with the Garry’s Mod version and surpassing it" to show everyone what it can do.
"My idea of a Netflix for games doesn’t work. It’s not feasible. It’s not how people discover games. You can’t land people on a menu of 60 games and say have fun. That’s not a good experience. People want to find games through recommendations, through active multiplayer games, through watching streamers, influencers and content creators. We have been coming at it from the wrong direction.
We shouldn’t strive to be a platform with the most games available. We should strive to be a platform with the best, most popular games available. Where good taste and great opinions are valued beyond everything else. This is a very human thing, this isn’t something that can be replaced by AI, ever."

Game funding will no longer be open to everyone either - as they've dealt a lot with AI slop games. Instead, it will be based on approvals, so they'll be curating what games can earn revenue.
Additionally, they're getting rid of the hated Citizen player model, replacing it with a more human-like character. That's one point I feel is a shame, I like their weird looking people - it gave it some character.
I do hope their relaunch goes well when it becomes free to play, as another platform like this supported on Linux that's actually popular would be amazing to have.
