Sports Interactive has shared another look at what’s coming to Football Manager 27, this time focusing on improvements to the 2D match engine, in-game editor and several smaller changes designed to make managing a club a little easier. The classic 2D view has received some attention with smaller player discs and footballs, improved shadows, more transparent goal nets and player discs that now use feet instead of arrows to show which direction they’re facing.

The in-game editor is also getting a makeover with a new full-screen interface that makes information easier to find and reduces the number of clicks needed to make changes. Monthly reports will provide more details on club finances, loan player performances and how supporters and the board feel about the team’s progress. Scouting reports have been improved as well, including the annual NXGN 50 message, which now displays all 50 top young prospects directly instead of making players open another screen to see the full list.

Training and backroom advice are getting some useful additions, giving managers more control without constantly jumping between menus. Match preparation can now be adjusted directly through messages, weekly training schedules are easier to edit and staff members will offer more detailed advice on transfers, scouting and negotiations. There’s also a new concussion recovery protocol developed with input from the Professional Footballers’ Association, requiring players to receive clearance from a neurologist before returning to action.

Some of the smaller matchday details are worth mentioning. Players will now look directly at referees when receiving cards or arguing decisions, teammates will react to red cards and new gestures have been added before set pieces. Certain stadium crowds will feature drums where appropriate and assistant referees’ flags will move more naturally thanks to updated cloth physics. Managers can also watch highlights from previous matches immediately after leaving a game without having to advance to the next day. The experimental Daylight Offside rule currently being trialled in the Canadian Premier League has also been included with options to adjust its use through the Pre-Game Editor.

FM27 features more than 18 million database changes and 1,500 competition updates, along with two new licensed leagues. Several competitions have received updated formats and scheduling rules, including changes to the Champions League, MLS and various domestic leagues. Other returning features include seasonal and historical Best XIs, drag-and-drop controls on the Captains screen and the ability to view player shortlists when starting a career unemployed. There are also 19 officially branded competition backgrounds, additional player status indicators and more detailed match statistics to help managers make decisions.

These are just some of the changes coming to Football Manager 27 with plenty of smaller improvements covered in the official development blog. Sports Interactive also plans to show more of the game in action during an upcoming livestream on the Football Manager YouTube channel.
