Back when I was still young, I dreamed of Super Smash Bros on the go. I remember being blown away by the various homebrew attempts at it, and being floored when Nintendo decided to bring Smash 4 to the system themselves. Since then we've seen Smash Bros Ultimate playable on the go on the Switch, with the 3DS long-since being thrown to the wayside. But now? It's back and better than ever. We have Super Smash Bros Melee fully playable, and it's awesome.
Released a few weeks ago at this point, the melee-3ds project is a fork of the doldecomp Melee decompilation bringing the full experience to the New Nintendo 3DS. On top of the base experience, we see stereoscopic 3D, a new touch screen dashboard, optional wide screen, and custom FPS targets that go all the way to 60. The game doesn't necessarily hit that target all the time though. Multiplayer is also possible using Slippi Direct via a separate beta build of the game.
The full feature list can be found below:
Features said:
- Native stereoscopic 3D in gameplay and perspective menus, adjusted with the system slider.
- 4:3 by default, with an optional expanded view that reveals more of the scene without stretching it.
- A touch-screen dashboard with portraits, stocks, and damage for up to four fighters, plus menu guidance, an optional FPS display, a frame-rate mode switch, and custom button mapping.
- Original music and sound effects, UCF 0.84 input fixes, and C-stick attacks in single-player modes.
- Two builds, installable side by side: everything unlocked with editable tournament-friendly defaults, or a fresh save with vanilla options that you unlock by playing. Progress saves to the SD card as Dolphin-compatible memory-card files.
- HOME Menu launch through an installable CIA, with a disc icon and a Final Destination/Fox diorama. Homebrew Launcher is also supported.
- Optional Diet Melee scenery for five stages, simplifying visuals while retaining the original stage gameplay and collision.
In terms of performance, you can expect 60fps on most stages in a 1v1 setting and a steady 30fps in a four-player brawl on larger stages, with some problematic maps noted to bring it below that.
For those interested in the AI usage for this project, no specific disclosure is provided for the 3DS release. The decompilation repo the project is forked from however does note the below for those wishing to make use of AI for their contributions:
AI Assistance said:
Using AI to match functions is acceptable and frequently practiced. However, please adhere to the following guidelines:
- Refrain from allowing AI to name fields in structs or other globally accessible identifiers.
- Discourage AI from attempting to match data sections, instead focusing solely on code matches.
- When submitting pull requests or issues, avoid including AI output in the body or in comments, and do not submit automated code reviews. An AI summary which is both relevant and concise may be included if it is wrapped in markdown comments (>) to differentiate it from human writing.
As with the vast majority of these projects, you will need to bring your own copy of the game to get started, with the US v1.02 version specifically listed. With that you're able to generate an installable CIA file to install directly onto your 3DS. Full instructions can be found on the project's readme file.
