Setting expectations.
Riot Games has released a final gameplay trailer for 2XKO, its short-lived fighting game set to be sunsetted later this year. The game is going out with a bang, with a shock reveal of a secret character coming alongside the games last major update.
This final major update, set to go live on the 27th October, was previously confirmed to feature Samira as the game's 16th character. This trailer features a showcase of her move set in action, however she shares the spotlight with Sett, a character who had been long requested from fans.
Sett, a bulky brawler, is seen to possess a combination of shattering blows and powerful grabs in this trailer. A significant difference between his 2XKO abilities and the kit available to him in League of Legends is a powered-up state which appears to intensify many of his special moves, granting them new and dangerous properties. One of his supers also appears to show him grabbing both characters on the enemy team at once, slamming them together in a homage to his MOBA manifestation.
The reception to this trailer is torn between excitement and understandable sadness. The trailer's top comment on YouTube, penned by user il3967, reads: "This is like watching a kid get visited by Spider-man at the hospital."
2XKO was in development at Riot Games for a long time, and released earlier this year to much fanfare from fighting game fans. Unfortunately, the development team responsible for it almost immediately suffered layoffs, and later the 2XKO's end of service was announced as player retention was not strong enough to justify the cost of support of additional work on the game beyond its first season of character releases.
Nonetheless, it is a game with a lot of merit. It's also not vanishing forever unlike other live service games who have followed a similar path. The game will remain playable for the foreseeable future, and the microtransaction store has been taken out and replaced with an optional one-time purchase that unlocks the full suite of in-game cosmetics, save perhaps for a Chipotle promotional avatar outfit. As such, those excited by Sett's reveal can enjoy messing around with him later this month.
